Abstract
Polymer in the form of a transparent block is produced from ethylenically unsaturated monomeric material which is not a solvent for, and has a lower specific gravity than, the polymer produced therefrom, by a process in which the monomeric material is heated at a temperature below 90 DEG C. in admixture with a monomer-soluble radical polymerization catalyst while subjected to a pressure in excess of the vapour pressure normally exerted by the monomeric material under the polymerization conditions. The process may be effected batchwise or continuously. Specified monomers are vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride and acrylonitrile. Specified catalysts are acetyl, benzoyl, lauroyl and caproyl peroxides, peresters and azobisiso-butyronitrile; and chain transfer agents, cross-linking agents, plasticizers, fillers, lubricants and pigments may also be present. In Examples (1) and (2) vinyl chloride and (3) a mixture of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate are polymerized in the presence of lauroyl peroxide.
