Abstract

Graft polymers are prepd. by (a) passing a soln. of a diene rubber in a mixt. of an aromatic alkenyl monomer and a comonomer into a first reaction zone of an elongated reactor with a series of reaction zones at a controlled temp. (b) polymerising the monomer mixt. to a conversion sufficient to cause formation of an apparent separate phase of the rubber, while agitating so that this apparent separate phase forms a large number of particles in the monomer-polymer phase, is not >35% wt. of the monomer being added to the reaction mixt. together with a mol.wt. regulator, after the formation of the particles, and (c) passing the partly polymerised reaction mixt. to a second reaction zone, and completing polymsn. Process gives e.g. ABS polymers, with a high impact resistance, high scratch resistance, high creep resistance, and good thermal stability.
