Abstract

Insulating material consists of a foamed glass structure in which the walls of communicating or closed macrocells have a closed microcellular structure. The material may contain at least one porous filler, e.g. expanded clay, foamed slag, pumice slag, foamed glass, brick bats, vermiculite, expanded perlite or hollow spherical silicate particles. Fibrous materials, e.g. stone wool flakes, asbestos and polyamide fibres, and magnesium oxide may also be added. The foamed glass may be soda-lime glass, slag, basalt or quartz. The hollow silicate particles are formed by heating thin layers of silicate particles to a temperature of at least 500 DEG C. for 1-20 secs. The body may be prepared <PICT:1000136/C1/1> by mixing ground glass or glass-like material, which may or may not be wetted with water or sugar and ethylene glycol, with the filler and heating to form a foam structure. The foam may have an open or closed cell structure by varying the firing temperature, which for soda-lime glass is about 700 DEG C. for the open cell structure and about 800 DEG C. for the closed cell structure. The firing temperature may be reduced by a flux, e.g. sodium or lead borate or sodium silico-fluoride. The body may also be prepared by foaming a glass or vitreous powder with a gellable colloidal solution and a foaming agent, the foam then being dried and sintered with the porous filler. The colloidal solution may be water glass, aluminium hydroxide, titanium hydroxide, precondensates of urea and formaldehyde and urea and phenols, phenol modified resorcine resins or bentonite. The gelling is effected by means of weak acids, e.g. citric or tartaric acids for water glass and oxalic acid for the urea resins, or by the in situ oxidation of sulphurous acid by hydrogen peroxide, or, in the case of resorcine resins by the addition of paraformaldehyde and sodium hydroxide. When the hollow silicate filler particles are employed they are wetted with water glass solution with or without a soluble salt of an alkaline earth metal, mixed with glass powder with or without other porous fillers and the whole is heated to 700-850 DEG C. and allowed to cool slowly. The body may be reinforced by metal inlays. Fig. 2 shows the dried fired body with macropores 7 and lamellae 8 with micropores 9.
