Abstract

1,000,074. Cold separation of air. LA FLEUR CORPORATION. March 12, 1964 [April 18, 1963], No. 10575/64. Heading F4P. Precooled compressed air is separated into nitrogen, oxygen and argon by expanding it at a valve 29 to just above atmospheric pressure into a rectification column 18, withdrawing product liquid oxygen from the base thereof, withdrawing an overhead gaseous mixture of nitrogen and argon through a duct 38 and passing it to a column 19 from the base of which product liquid argon is withdrawn through a duct 41 and from the head of which product gaseous nitrogen is drawn through a duct 46: the head of each column 18, 19 being cooled by passage of an external refrigerant, e,g. hydrogen or helium traversing condenser coils 34, 42, in series. The base of each column is heated by feed air traversing coils 26, 27. Preliminary cooling is effected in exchangers 16, 17 cooled by separated nitrogen.
