- une première machine électrique est couplée au moteur à combustion et se charge de la génération de courant, du redémarrage moteur à combustion, et de la synchronisation des arbres de la boîte de vitesses avec le moteur à combustion pour les changements de rapports,
- une deuxième machine électrique est couplée aux roues et assure la traction du véhicule en mode de roulage entièrement électrique, le décollage du véhicule en marche avant et en marche arrière, et fourni du couple à la roue lorsque le moteur à combustion change de rapports pour éviter une rupture de couple.
Il n’y a pas d’embrayage ni de synchronisateurs, la première machine électrique assurant la synchronisation des rapports en venant aligner le régime du moteur à combustion à celui de la boîte de vitesses.
