On sait que, notamment dans un but de limitation des emballages multiples et des suremballages, la distribution de produits en vrac est de plus en plus recherchée et mise en place. Ce type de distribution permet de transporter sur le lieu de vente un seul et unique contenant maître dans lequel est disposé un important volume de produit en vrac. Le nombre d'emballages est limité à un seul emballage, une seule étiquette pour le contenant maître, avec en plus l'avantage de la limitation du volume perdu lors du transport comme le nécessiteraient de multiples emballages de petites quantités individualisées. Le recyclage est de fait limité également puisque le volume de l'emballage maître est de loin beaucoup plus réduit que le volume de la somme des emballages de petites quantités individualisées. La collecte des emballages maîtres en vue du recyclage est nécessairement améliorée. Le problème reste la distribution de ces produits en vrac dans des contenants individualisés, soit propres au consommateur soit de simples sachets en matériau biodégradable par exemple. Une solution consiste à placer ces produits dans des bacs, le consommateur venant se servir avec un outil tel qu'une écope pour remplir et peser la quantité de produit souhaitée. Le contenu de ces bacs, même dans des bacs fermés par un couvercle ouvrable, reste accessible aux poussières et aux autres contaminations de la part de l'environnement et des clients, ce qui n'est pas satisfaisant. De plus, le contenu en vrac dans un bac se dégrade mécaniquement par les mouvements de piochage, à l'aide de l'écope, qui peuvent dégrader les produits, surtout s'ils sont fragiles.
