Description
DescriptionDescription
Title of the invention: Device for collecting floating algae before stranding on the coast.
Since 2011, massive strandings of Sargassum algae on the coasts of the Caribbean islands have succeeded each other with ever increasing magnitude and duration, causing economic, ecological and human catastrophe.
The collection of sargassum stranded on the beaches that is currently practiced is not the best answer. This collection can not be done effectively by hand, it requires the use of construction equipment which also collect sand, destroying all the ecosystems of these beaches. In addition, if it is not carried out in less than 48 hours, the sargasses have started their decomposition with the production of toxic gases H 2 S and NH 3 .
Furthermore, this pickup is done only on a very small part of the coast. The coasts of these islands are made up of 25% of beaches, some of which are inaccessible to gear. The other coasts are rocky. It is therefore at least 80% of the coastline which is never rid of its algae which leads to an ecological disaster not yet measured.
Evil must be combated upstream by picking up before stranding or before invasion of beaches, ports, bays and mangroves.
There are currently some methods of picking up before beaching, in particular with conveyor belts, but they run up against the problem of evacuating algae because the collecting vessel is quickly congested and the transhipment of these algae onto a service barge immobilizes the pickup ship. Then, when the barge has returned to the quay, further handling is necessary to empty it.
We suggest collecting the sargassum in mesh bags towed between the two hulls of a catamaran. When the bag is full, we close it, and immediately put another in place to resume pickup.
The abandoned bag floats. It is taken in tow by a small service vessel which can tow several simultaneously, and bring them back to the edge (quay, beach, ramp etc.). These bags are then very easy to load on a suitable trailer. Or else emptied directly in a few seconds into a dump truck which will take the algae to their final destination. Once emptied, the bag is reintroduced into the circuit.
The pickup vessel works almost, if not completely, continuously. Its performance is therefore optimized. In addition, handling of algae packed in bags is greatly facilitated.
The immediate towing of the bag full of algae is not compulsory: these two operations can be separated. Before dropping the bag, it is enough to equip it with a small anchor and a float fitted with a flag. The bag is thus immobilized, easily located and can be towed or delayed.
These bags can also be emptied into a larger capacity vessel which will carry the algae above the bottom of several hundred meters where they can be poured. This can be done in particular by crushing the aerocytes which allow them to float or by pumping over 50 meters, depth from which the crushing of the aerocytes by pressure is sufficient for the algae not to rise.
[0012] Les dessins annexés illustrent l’invention :The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention:
[0013] [fig.l] représente le navire vu du dessus et en coupe verticale AA.[Fig.l] shows the ship seen from above and in vertical section AA.
It consisted of a 25 mm knotted mesh net made with a 2 mm wire. The starting net measures 5 m x 5 m. It is closed on two opposite edges and sewn to form a cylinder 5 m long and 1.59 m in diameter. For collection, one end of the cylinder is closed by a rope passing through the mesh like a fishing trawl. The other end is stretched over a metal frame whose span is equal to 5 m. This frame is installed between the two hulls of a catamaran ship and towed in a layer of sargassum. When the bag is full, close it and replace it with an empty bag.
OF THE VESSEL: The pickup vessel [fig.l] is a catamaran which tows, between its two hulls, the open mesh bag, fixed to the above-mentioned frame. Its size depends on the size of the bag. For the prototype bag tested, the ship is 3 meters wide and 5 meters long. It is equipped with a covered roof of 15 m 2 of photovoltaic solar collectors, batteries to store the electric energy thus recovered and electric motors operating two paddle wheels located at the rear of the hulls. The choice of impellers as the propulsion mode is dictated by the fact that the algae render the propellers inoperative.
The speed and the direction of rotation of these impellers can be modulated independently of each other which allows to steer the ship without the need for a rudder which would be very ineffective or even inoperative at low speed especially since it would be crowded with algae.
The frame on which is fixed the mesh bag can be tilted with levers in order to be able to raise it to close the full bag and replace it with an empty bag [fig.2].
Cette dernière solution est moins chère mais moins «écologique».PROPULSION VARIANTS: Apart from electric motors, a variant for propulsion is proposed. It consists of a main motor driving a hydraulic pump which supplies two hydraulic motors instead of the two electric motors. This main engine can be either electric, powered by solar batteries, or thermal (diesel). The latter solution is cheaper but less "ecological".
