Le système (10) comprend, pour chaque ouvrier (12A, 12B, 12C), un premier dispositif de protection (18) comprenant des premiers moyens de géolocalisation (20) et des premiers moyens (22) d'émission d'un premier signal comprenant une information de localisation de ce premier dispositif de protection (18), et pour chaque véhicule ferroviaire (28) : - un second dispositif de protection (30) comprenant des seconds moyens de géolocalisation (32) et des seconds moyens (34) de réception de chaque premier signal, et - une unité de contrôle (42) déterminant une première distance entre le premier dispositif de protection (18) et la voie ferrée (16) et une seconde distance (D) entre le premier dispositif de protection (18) et le second dispositif de protection (30), l'unité de contrôle (42) étant configurée pour activer des moyens de freinage d'urgence (40) lorsque la première distance est inférieure à une distance de sécurité et que la seconde distance (D) est inférieure à une distance de freinage (D1).
