Description
The present invention relates to an underwater hydrocarbon storage device, of the type comprising a reservoir adapted to be arranged on a seabed and provided with a filling opening. The invention applies to the recovery of hydrocarbons at a site of uncontrolled eruption of oil and gas. A recent accident in the Gulf of Mexico has highlighted the difficulty of controlling and stopping an underwater oil well in eruption, when a containment system can not maintain well pressure. Furthermore, in such a situation, the capture and recovery of the fluid are useless without adequate support surface, while the surface means necessary to treat a petroleum effluent are difficult to mobilize quickly on site. The present invention thus relates to the capture and storage at the bottom of the sea, at great depth, the erupting fluid for a period of a few days to a few weeks or more, pending the surface treatment.
US-A-7,448,404 discloses a storage device of the aforementioned type. However, it is a heavy rigid structure, difficult to deploy quickly and requiring dedicated vessels, which are generally not available at the site of an offshore oil accident. The invention aims to provide an inexpensive hydrocarbon subsea storage device that can be deployed easily and quickly by a ship of opportunity, tug type, generally mobilisable in one or two days. To this end, the subject of the invention is a device of the aforementioned type, characterized in that the reservoir comprises: an inflatable balloon of very elongated shape provided with the filling opening at one end and equipped with connecting members with at least one cable; and - at least one cable extending over at least the largest length of the balloon and connected thereto by means of said connecting members. According to other features of this device: - the balloon comprises a plurality of compartments integral with each other and communicating with each other by passages; - The balloon comprises at least two longitudinal portions extending on either side of a cable and folded one over the other in the waiting position of the balloon; - The balloon comprises a central portion lined with two cables and flanked by two side portions folded over the central portion in the waiting position of the balloon; the device comprises frangible links for holding the balloon in the folded position; - The device comprises a drum on which the folded balloon is wound in the waiting position; - The balloon is equipped on its upper face with at least one connector, and the device further comprises a compensation balloon adapted to be connected to this connection; - The filling opening of the balloon is equipped with a funnel open downwards; the or each cable is provided at each end with a connection connection to another cable; the device comprises a series of links adapted to connect the or each cable to dead bodies; and the device comprises chains adapted to be connected to the or each cable. The subject of the invention is also a facility for capturing and storing hydrocarbons escaping from an underwater well, characterized in that it comprises: a plurality of storage devices as defined above, whose reservoirs are arranged around the well; and a device for collecting and dispensing hydrocarbons that escape from the well, this device comprising: a bell ; . means for positioning the bell above the well; and. transfer means for selectively fluidically connecting the top of the bell to the filling opening of any of the baudruches so as to transfer fluid into that opening.
In one embodiment, said transfer means comprise a pipe provided at its free end with an upper orifice adapted to be disposed under the funnel of each balloon. An exemplary embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: - Figure 1 is a plan view of a storage device according to the invention; Figures 2 to 5 are views taken in section, respectively, along lines 11-11 to V-V of Figure 1; Figure 6 shows schematically, in side view, a drum on which is wound a balloon as shown in Figures 1 to 5; Figure 7 is a sectional view along the line VII-VII of Figure 6; Figure 8 is a partial top view of the object of Figure 7; Figure 9 schematically illustrates the laying of the balloon on a seabed; Figure 10 illustrates similarly the laying of successive baudruches on the seabed; Figures 11 to 13 schematically illustrate the holding in position of a balloon on the seabed; Figure 14 schematically illustrates, in plan, the arrangement of multiple similar baudruches around an underwater well head in uncontrolled eruption; Figure 15 shows a bell for collecting and dispensing hydrocarbons escaping from the well; Figure 16 is a plan view of the object of Figure 15; Figure 17 schematically illustrates the recovery of a filled balloon, and Figure 18 is a corresponding detail view. The storage device shown in FIGS. 1 to 5 essentially comprises an inflatable balloon 1 made of a suitable material, in particular an elastomer or a polyurethane, optionally reinforced with a geotextile layer. This balloon is, with its accessories which will be described below, a reservoir R. The balloon 1 has a very great length and consists of three rosaries juxtaposed 2 compartments 3. All compartments 3 communicate with each other, so that the balloon can be fully inflated from a filling opening 4 provided at one of its ends, visible in Figure 16. The opening 4 is equipped with a funnel 104 open downwards. Each compartment 3 is connected by welding and / or stitching to the adjacent compartments by flat strips 5 at certain points of which there are provided passages or communication tunnels 6 of large diameter. As is well known, off-shore eruptions generally consist of a mixture of oil, gas and water at high pressure (of the order of 100 to 300 bars) and high temperature (from the order of 50 to 80 ° C). By cooling in contact with seawater and the fact of relaxation, the oil sees its viscosity increase and can even freeze; the gas, in the presence of water, can form hydrate crystals (similar to ice crystals) that tend to clog up the pipes or pipe narrowing. As a result, the diameter of the passages 6 is chosen large enough to avoid any risk of clogging by the hydrates. As a dimensional example: - the central string 2A is slightly wider than the side straps 2B: about 10 m against about 8 m; all the compartments 3 have the same length, between 8 and 10 m; - the balloon comprises thirty regions of three compartments, a total length of the order of 250 to 300 m; when inflated (FIGS. 2 to 5), the thickness of the bladder is between 3 and 5 m; the passages 6 have a diameter of the order of 1 m or more. Thus, the storage capacity of a bladder 1 is of the order of 100,000 barrels (15,900 m3). The balloon is completed by bridges 7 arranged under the two longitudinal bands 5 at the rate of two bridges per compartment 3. The bridges 7 are formed by straps made of the same flexible material as the balloon and welded / sewn to it by their ends. A cable 8 is threaded into each series of jumpers and protrudes at each end of the balloon, where it is provided with a connection piece 108 (Figures 9 and 10). The balloon is further completed by a small number of connectors 9 disposed on the upper surface of compartments 3 adjacent the ends of the balloon. The total mass of such a balloon and its two cables is of the order of 135 tons. For storing and holding the balloon, the two side straps 2B thereof are folded over the median beads 2A (Figures 7 and 8), and are held by frangible links 11 (Figure 8). Thus, the two cables 8 are visible on each side. The assembly is then wound on a drum 12 (Figure 6). Figures 9 to 11 illustrate the laying of the balloon 1 on a seabed 13 of great depth (typically 1000 m or more).
The drum 12 carrying the balloon 1 is loaded on a tug 14 or other readily available ship. The onboard weight is of the order of 170 tons, which allows to load it with a handling means commonly available in a petroleum port. A dead body 15 is disposed in a suitable location on the bottom 13, this dead body being connected to one end of two parallel initiation cables 16 each provided with a connection piece 116. The balloon 1 is lowered, under the effect of its own weight, to the right of the dead body 15, and each of its cables 8 is connected to the free end of the corresponding cable 16 by a ROV (Remote Operated Vehicle) by means of the ends 108 and 116. Then (FIGS. and 12), lateral dead bodies 17 are arranged on either side of the balloon and are connected to the two cables 8 by slings lightened 18, this at selected spacings along the balloon. To stem an uncontrolled eruption of an off-shore wellhead 19 (Figure 14), a plurality of baudruches 1 are radially or "petalled" disposed around the wellhead, with their filler ends located on a circle 20 centered on the wellhead. The radius of the circle 20 is typically several tens of meters, for example 60 m. Of course, beforehand, as many reels 12 as petals are embarked on the ship 14. For that when a balloon 1 was completely unrolled the reel 12 temporarily motorized to ensure the tensioning and reversibility of the operation of descent; the next balloon is attached thereto by means of the tips 108 of the four cables (Figure 10). When the first balloon has been entirely placed on the bottom 13, the next balloon is unhooked, and its lower end is moved to the right of the dead body 15 associated with it. Then (Figures 15 and 16), a device 21 for collecting and dispensing hydrocarbons is lowered to the right of the wellhead 19. This device 21 comprises a bell 22 from the top of which a rigid gooseneck 23. the latter is pivotally mounted on the bell 22 by means of a rotary joint 24, and its free end portion 25 is horizontal and provided on its upper generatrix with an outlet orifice 26. This orifice is situated at a distance from the wellhead 19 equal to the radius of the circle 20.
The bell 22 is held in position by means of several dead bodies 27 arranged in a circle around the wellhead and each connected to the periphery of the bell by a sling 28. The bell may be floating or heavy and in this case placed on a stabilizing structure (legs + mattress) In use, the orifice 26 is placed under the funnel 104 of a first balloon 1 by an ROV. The oil-gas-water mixture leaving the wellhead at high pressure and high temperature is confined by the bell 22 and directed into the gooseneck 23. It leaves it through the orifice 26 and thus enters the windbag. It begins to inflate and unfold flat due to broken links. This inflation propagates from compartment 3 to compartment 3 as long as the mixture collected is not frozen. When the balloon is completely filled or stops filling, the ROV rotates the gooseneck 23 until the hole 26 is below the funnel 104 of the next balloon. For a leak of 100,000 barrels per day, we see that each balloon can substantially collect a day of flight, because with such a high flow rate, the cooling of the mixture is relatively slow. As a result, with fourteen balloons, two weeks of leakage can be collected, leaving as much time to seal the well. If the flow is lower, each petal fills more slowly, and possibly incompletely because of the faster cooling of the fluid. Figures 17 and 18 illustrate the recovery of the baudruches after their filling. This recovery can occur several days, or even weeks later, when a hydrocarbon processing vessel 29 could be brought to the right of a bottom 30 of shallow depth (for example 100 m) in a region close to the well. 19. For this, each petal containing cold petroleum can be towed in shallow depths in the "above the bottom" or "off-bottom tow" configuration. One of the difficulties of the recovery lies in the fact that when the oil is brought to a shallow depth, the gas relaxes, and a part of the gas dissolved in the liquids comes out of the liquid phase and occupies a larger space. Thus, the passage from 1000 m bottom to 500 m bottom results in a doubling of the volume of gas. From 1000 m to 100 m bottom, the volume of gas is multiplied by 10, but of 1000 m on the surface, it is multiplied by 100. That is why we prefer to tow the baudruches over the bottom 30 without bring them to the surface. For this, a compensation balloon 31, forming an annex balloon, is fixed on a connector 9 of the balloon located near the high point of the latter. Strings 32 are attached to the cables 8 in place of at least a portion of the dead bodies 15 and 17, the assembly having an equivalent weight. Since the recovered mixture is lighter than water, the balloon is kept a short distance above the bottom 13, as seen in FIG. 18.
A tow chain 33 is then attached to the balloon 1, which is towed by the ship 14 up to the bottom 30. During this movement, the spacing of the balloon above the bottom avoids any deterioration, and the gas which is released and relaxes gradually fills the balloon 31, facilitating the recovery of the balloon. When the bottom 30 is reached, the balloon is stabilized by means of dead bodies 34, and the ship 29, equipped with oil treatment equipment 35 and a riser line 36, is anchored to proximity. The riser 36 is connected to a flange 37 located at one end or in several places of the petal to allow the natural rise of the light oil. A pumping system can also be lowered into the riser to activate the fluid.
As it is understood, if the hydrocarbon leak is not controlled when all the baudruches are filled, it is possible to continue the recovery operation by moving away one by one the baudruches in the manner indicated above and by depositing on the bottom 13 of new empty balloons.
