Abstract
Description
Friction welding tool, and method of obtaining such a tool.
The present invention is in the field of friction welding, and more particularly relates to a tool for performing friction welding of metal parts to be assembled. Friction welding is a welding process that involves heating the parts to be assembled by frictional pressure of a rotary tool on these parts, the material is thus brought locally to a pasty state. In addition, the rotation of the tool combined with its application in pressure on the parts leads to a driving effect of the pasty material and therefore a localized mixing of the constituent materials of the two parts to be assembled, which finally ensures the connection between the rooms. Due to the mechanical and thermal characteristics of the metals to be assembled, it is necessary to ensure with the tool a pressure and sufficient heating to bring the metal to the pasty state. Tools are therefore used refractory material, but the mechanical strength can be limited and therefore having such limited durability, and moreover their cost is high. Thus, to assemble aluminum parts by friction welding, it is known to use cold tooling steel tools typically made of Z50CDV5. To assemble steel parts, Tungsten Rhenium tools are used to ensure durability, at the expense of a very high material cost.
An increase in durability can still be ensured by using a tool material that is harder and more refractory, such as silicon nitride Si 3 N 4 or polycrystalline boron nitride nitride (CBN), such as in particular
2 mentioned in EP-A-1688208, but at the expense of an even higher cost. Furthermore, WO-01/85384 shows a friction welding tool comprising a body and a working head with a peripheral shoulder and a central work tip, completely made of a superabrasive material or coated with such a material, the so-called head being held on one end of the body with the interposition of a thermal barrier to prevent or at least limit the heat flow from the working head to the body. The aforementioned document indicates that the body is preferably made of cemented tungsten carbide. The working tip is made of cemented tungsten carbide coated with or made of a suitable superabrasive material of the CBN type. The superabrasive material can be obtained in several layers or itself coated with monocrystalline filaments of Beryllium oxide for example, by various techniques such as physical or chemical vapor deposition (PVD, CVD), ion implantation, to increase its resistance to mechanical and chemical wear. The thermal barrier is made of titanium alloy. To ensure a better connection between the body and the head, it is used a collar that surrounds said head and body covering the thermal barrier zone, this collar being a superalloy, nickel-cobalt or cobalt-chromium, with interposition another thermal barrier between the collar on the one hand and the head and body on the other.
In addition to the relative fragility of the body, the constitution of the tool described in this document is complex, in particular by the difficulty of ensuring a good mechanical connection between the body and the active part of the tool. In addition, the collar in particular creates a troublesome additional space when using the tool.
An object of the present invention is to provide a simpler tool, less bulky, having a high durability while reducing the cost of materials used.
With these objectives in view, the invention relates to a friction welding tool comprising a body arranged to be rotated about an axis and a head disposed at an axial end of said body and connected thereto, the head having a central work tip and a peripheral shoulder. According to the invention, the tool is characterized in that the head comprises at least one layer of refractory material recharged on the steel body by thermal deposition. The advantage of the tool according to the invention is to comprise a steel body, typically tooling steel, tough and resilient, serving as a support for a refractory material harder and more resistant to wear, while the specification a solid monomaterial tool necessarily result in a compromise between hardness and fragility, and a tool as described in WO-01/85384 cited above would add a complexity of implementation. The invention also relates to a method of manufacturing the tool, according to which the refractory material is recharged by torch, arc plasma or laser, the latter technique being preferred because it makes it possible to reduce the dilution ratio of the support steel in the reloaded material, thus giving the head of the tool a higher refractivity. According to particular provisions of the invention: - the body has at its axial end a bowl in which the reloading is performed. The edges of the concavity formed by this bowl provide additional strength of the connection between refractory head and body, surrounding the recharged portion on a portion of the thickness thereof, and thus clamping the periphery thereof when it heats up during welding. - Preferably, the head is formed of several layers reloaded one on the other and having a property gradient between the steel of the body and the refractory material on the surface of the head. - The surface of the body is roughened before reloading, for example by corunduming, to promote the beginning of physical attachment of the reloaded material. - The different layers have a refined edge connecting to the edges of the bowl, and the surface layer material of the head has a thick edge and with a rounded, to limit the risk of chipping.
Other features and advantages will become apparent in the description which will be made of an exemplary embodiment of a friction welding tool according to the invention.
Reference is made to the accompanying drawings in which: - Figure 1 is a sectional view of the tool, - Figure 2 is a diagram illustrating a preferred method of reloading.
The tool shown in section Figure 1 comprises a body 1, of generally cylindrical shape of axis A, of conventional tooling steel, and whose end surface 11 is shaped as a bowl. The tool also comprises a plurality of superimposed layers of materials deposited by a laser, and / or electron beam, and / or plasma / laser hybrid, or any other known method of the state of the art, and having a gradient of physical properties, for example one or more iron-tungsten alloy bonding layers 2, with proportions varying progressively from one layer to another, the first of which, for example at 25% tungsten, is deposited directly on the steel surface of the bowl 11, and the following can be respectively for example 50 and 75 tungsten. one or more intermediate layers 3 based on refractory metal, such as tungsten, and doped with refractory materials capable of increasing the hot hardness and the resistance to creep, one or more final refractory layers 4, which form the central pin; 41 and the peripheral shoulder 42, made of refractory material such as a metal ceramic, silicon nitride Si3N4 or polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PCBN).
The at least one bonding layer and intermediate layer is typically 0.1 to 1 mm thick and, as can be seen in FIG. 1, their edges are thinned near the junction with the peripheral wall of the cuvette.
The final layer or layers of refractory material have a generally greater thickness, especially at the central pin 41, and also on the periphery of the shoulder 42 whose surface is connected by a rounded surface on the body surface.
The intermediate layer (s), preferably based on tungsten, may be doped with potassium, silicon, or aluminum, in a small amount, typically less than 1000 ppm, which makes it possible to increase the hardness to 1500 C. by a factor of 3. microalloyed with ThO2 thorium oxide in an amount of 1 to 5%, making it possible to multiply the creep resistance at 1500 C by a factor of three and thus substantially increase the durability of the tool, or alloyed with rhenium in an amount of 3 to 25 to increase by 50% at 1500 C simultaneously the hot hardness and the creep resistance.
The material of the final coating, for example Si3N4 or PCBN, will be determined according to the materials to be welded, the range of weldability and the parameters of the welding process for which the tool is intended: speed of rotation and penetration, and pressure of the 'tool.
10 The manufacturing process of the tool typically comprises the following steps: - production of a bowl 11 in the end end face of the tool body 1 made of steel, - corundum blasting to make the surface 11 of the bowl rough , and especially on the periphery, improve the physicochemical bonding of the subsequent layers to limit the risk of flaking of the edges, - laser reloading, in several successive and overlapping layers of 0.1 to 1 mm or more thick , to form the superimposed attachment layers 2, and intermediate layers 3, having the above-mentioned property gradient, and thinned edges, - laser reloading, on the last intermediate layer, of silicon nitride or PCBN, forming the counter central and the rounded peripheral shoulder, - final grinding of the surface to obtain precisely the desired geometry.35 The reloading will for example be carried out according to the indications su ivantes, in no way limiting. A laser of 2.5 KW giving a focal spot at the impact of the radius of 2.5 mm in diameter is used, more generally a laser power of between 1 and 3 KW with a focal spot lying between 200 μm and 4 mm. The refueling area is protected by an Argon type gas jet fed by a large diameter nozzle with a flow rate of 10 to 50 l / min. The powder or the mixture of powder used, of composition as defined above as a function of the layer produced, has grains of particle size of 10 to 120 μm, preferably 30 to 50 μm, a too fine particle size being detrimental because likely to create amalgam, and too large particle size being unfavorable for the good hanging. The powder is sprayed through a nozzle of diameter 1 to 3 mm under argon carrier gas pressure of less than 1 bar, for example 0.6 bar, providing a flow rate of 10 g / min. The tool is rotated during reloading, so as to ensure a reloading thickness which will be a function of the tangential rotation speed, which will be adjusted according to the thicknesses desired locally. Thus a tangential deposition rate of 10 mm / sec allows a deposition thickness of the order of 0.5 mm, following a concentric spiral path, as shown in Figure 2, from the periphery to the center of the tool. This typical method of the reloading process makes it possible for example to easily increase the thickness of reloading at the central pin of the tool by adjusting the speed of rotation to obtain a linear speed less than at the periphery, and thus to obtain a superior thickness. Another technique consists of performing a static laser treatment or under simple revolution. The laser beam is defocused or shaped to cover the entire area to be treated of the pion, the interaction time is set to ensure the compactness of the deposit, its strong adhesion to the substrate, without thermally affecting the substrate. 10
