Abstract

A ship (1) carries a long tarpaulin (2) which is thrown into the water like a fishing net. Buoys (3) and an air chamber allow part of the tarpaulin to stay on the water: the other part is pulled downwards by weights (4) to form a wall. A rod protruding from the top of the buoy lifts the tarpaulin above sea level. High tension horizontal cables connect the end of the buoy rods together, middle cables connect the buoys together, bottom cables connect the weights together, and vertical cables connect each weight to a buoy. These horizontal and vertical cables form a mesh with the tarpaulin attached to it. The tarpaulin can be fitted and removed from the mesh to be cleaned, dried and folded. Independent claims are also included for the following: (i) the installation of the above device, by progressively placing the tarpaulin of the device in the water, moving the boat around the oil slick, and fixing the two ends of the tarpaulin and device to the back of the boat; and (ii) recovering the above device, by progressive recovery of the tarpaulin and device from the water by moving the boat slowly in the opposite direction, and washing, drying and automatic folding of the tarpaulin and mesh.
