Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 1> <Desc / CRUD Page number 1>

The present invention relates to a tool for use in the sclera incision for the introduction of an infusion cannula.

The invention also provides an infusion cannula for surgery of the posterior pole of the eye.

One of the aims of the invention is to achieve, on one hand, a tool for performing an incision facilitating the introduction of the cannula and on the other hand, easy cannula to establish and ensures its maintenance during the surgical operation.

For this purpose, the tool to the incision in the sclera for the introduction of an infusion cannula of the type comprising a handle at one end which extends a cutting tip and is characterized in that the tip is mounted in a molded piece having a shoulder, said tip having an inclined cutting edge on both sides and a back located substantially in the axis of the handle.

The cannula for use with such a tool is characterized in that it comprises a tube having, at one end, a connector for its connection to a bottle, while the other end comprises a collar from which s' extends a tubular element of smaller section than the tube and extended by a hollow needle with a beveled end, the hollow needle being connected to the tubular member by a shoulder.

With this arrangement, the cannula is automatically set when it is engaged in the sclera.

<Desc/Clms Page number 2> <Desc / CRUD Page number 2>

According to a particular characteristic, the length of the tubular member is less than the length of the cutting tip and the width thereof in the vicinity of the shoulder of the end piece substantially corresponds to the dimensions of the hollow needle to the right the shoulder thereof.

Preferably, the cannula comprises a bead located against the ferrule on the side opposite that from which extends the tubular member.

The invention will now be described in more detail with reference to a particular embodiment given by way of example only and represented in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of the tool.

2 shows in elevation the cannula according to the invention.

Figure 3 is an elevation view on a larger scale of the cannula.

Figures 4,5 and 6 are schematic views showing installation of the cannula.

The tool shown in Figure 1, consists of a sleeve 1 of plastic terminated by a connector 2 to the end of which protrudes a metal tip 3.

The metal tip 3 has, along one edge, a cutting edge 4 on both sides, while the back 5 is located in the body axis.

The tip 2 forms, at its end from which protrudes the tip 3, a shoulder 6, while the portion of the handle 1, in the vicinity of the tip, is provided with grooves, corrugations or other 7 to facilitate the holding of the tool.

In Figure 2, there is shown an infusion cannula which, during an intervention, to irrigate the eyeball to keep it in shape.

<Desc/Clms Page number 4> <Desc / CRUD Page number 4>

The cannula includes a flexible tube 10 preferably transparent and terminated at one end by a connector 11 to connect it to a vessel containing the irrigation liquid from the eyeball. At the other end, the cannula is provided with a flange 17 against which extends a ferrule 16. On the opposite side to the bead 17, the ferrule 16 is secured to a tubular element 15 of smaller cross section than the hose 10, itself extended by a hollow needle 12 whose free end 13 is bevelled.

The hollow needle 12 at its opposite end to that bevelled, is provided with a shoulder 14, said hollow needle affecting a frustoconical general shape, the large base is formed by the shoulder.

Figures 4,5 and 6 schematically show the use of the tool and the cannula.

The tip 3 is engaged in the sclera 21 and this engagement is limited by the shoulder 6 of the mouthpiece 2.

The tip 3 has a length greater than the length of the tubular member 15, but its configuration is such that, on the side of the nozzle 2, its width is slightly greater than the portion of the hollow needle 12 adjacent the shoulder 14, whereas its length is such that the incision 18 of the sclera on the side of the vitreous body 20 has smaller dimensions than those of the shoulder 14, the length of the tubular element 15 substantially corresponding to the thickness of sclera.

<Desc/Clms Page number 5> <Desc / CRUD Page number 5>

Thus, after having performed with the tip 3 the incision 18, the hollow needle 12 is engaged directly therein and is pushed until the collar 16 bears against the sclera.

In this position, the shoulder 14 of the hollow needle 12 cooperates with the end 20 of the incision 18 of the vitreous body side and the cannula is perfectly anchored.

When the operation is complete, the cannula can be easily removed.

Of course, the invention is not limited to the embodiment which has just been described and shown. On pourra y apporter de nombreuses modifications de détail sans sortir pour cela du cadre de l'invention. many minor changes can be made thereto without departing from the scope of the invention.
