Abstract

Detecting the presence of pathogenic organisms in water sample, involves concentrating pathogenic organisms, breaking to open cells of pathogenic organisms, concentrating DNA and/or RNA, amplifying nucleic acid and detecting DNA and/or RNA by qualitatively and/or quantitatively. The process is controlled fully automatically by using a control logic system. An Independent claim is included for a device for detecting the presence of pathogenic organisms in a water sample. The device comprises a unit (1) for concentrating the pathogenic organisms, a unit (2) for breaking open cells from the pathogenic organisms, a unit (3) for concentrating DNA and/or RNA, a unit (4) for amplifying nucleic acids, a unit (5) for qualitatively and/or quantitatively detecting DNA and/or RNA and a control logic system (6) which controls fully automatically the sequential treatment steps carried out by units (1) to (5), pumping units (7), automatic sampling and distribution units (8), and a central control system (9).
