Abstract

The procedure, esp for wooden furniture, consists of applying a water-based or cellulose stain to the bare wood, followed by a colorless coating which is left to dry and harden before lightly sanding the surface and applying wax or varnish to finish it. A second layer of the colorless coating can be applied where necessary, allowing each to dry for at least 48 hours. Following the wax or varnish finish the wood is left for 2 to 3 weeks before use, through this time can be reduced by subjecting it to UV light.

In the furniture industry, it is essential to provide the customer with a piece of furniture with a satisfactory finish.

For this purpose, on exposed surfaces, of raw wood, of furniture, first apply a water-based, cellulosic or other shade.

Then, a pore sealer is spread over this surface intended to make the wood fibers "go up", that is to say give a grainy appearance.

In a third step, the surface is shredded, that is to say, a light sanding is carried out using very very fine paper.

Finally, in a fourth step, this surface is finished using a cellulose varnish or polyurethane, or a wax.

It is found that a finish using a cellulose varnish is fragile vis-à-vis an impact because this varnish cracks. In addition, these varnishes have a low resistance to water and a very low resistance to heat, that is to say that when water stagnates for a very short time on this surface, it leaves an indelible mark. , just as when a hot object is placed on a varnish, the varnish also keeps an indelible mark.

For polyurethane varnishes, they have the same fragility on impact, but better resistance to water and average resistance to heat.

However, for these two types of varnish, these exhibit a certain degradation over time, which weakens them (causes cracks).

A wax finish gives a more pleasing appearance to the eye, does not cause any cracking problem but offers low resistance to heat because it attacks the bottom, that is to say the bou-

che-pores, ainsi qu'une faible résistance à l'eau qui laisse une trace blanche sur la surface.  che-pores, as well as a low resistance to water which leaves a white mark on the surface.

Some have proposed wax-based products to replace wax, but these products do not work well.

There is another finishing treatment called patina, in which a primer is first coated on the exposed surface in order to hide the wood, the actual finishing being done using a patina which will cover this primer.

This is a completely different technique.

In the coating of wood with a natural appearance, for the exterior woods and not the furniture woods, a stain is used, this being not used on the furniture because of its short longevity, since a stain is sensitive to sun rays, etc.

There is therefore a need for a finishing process which makes it possible to obtain a pleasant appearance while avoiding the defects of previous products, in particular with regard to water resistance and heat resistance.

To remedy these drawbacks, the present inventor has developed a method for finishing a wooden surface which comprises the steps consisting in: a) first applying a color to the apparent surface of raw wood water, cellulosic or other, - b) apply a colorless stain, - c) let the stain dry until it is hardened, - d) scratch the surface, - e) wax or varnish,

<Desc/Clms Page number 3><Desc / Clms Page number 3>

- f) wait until this finish is established before using the wood.

According to other characteristics: - between step d) and step e), it further comprises the steps consisting in: - g) ironing a second layer of colorless stain, - h) allowing to dry, - i) shelling again.

Figure img00030001

- when applying the first or second layer of colorless stain, a relatively oily stain layer is used, - in the drying step of the first layer of stain, it is left to dry for at least approximately 48 hours,
Figure img00030001

- in the waiting operation stage, we wait between 15 days to 3 weeks, - the operating waiting stage can be reduced by heating, for example with ultraviolet.

By such a process, an unexpected result was obtained in the sense that the finish was found to have the appearance of a waxed or varnished finish, that is to say very pleasant, showing no cracks with the weather resistant to heat and the presence of water.

We could indeed see that the finish obtained was resistant to heat, by placing on a finished tray according to the method of the present invention, for a quarter of an hour, a cast iron Dutch oven whose bottom was at a temperature of 120OC . When the Dutch oven was removed from the pan, there were logical marks of condensation which disappeared after a simple wiping, no subsequent trace appearing on the pan.

As for water resistance, no device allowing to measure it, experimental tests were also carried out which allowed us to

<Desc/Clms Page number 4><Desc / Clms Page number 4>

Experimental tests have also been carried out with commonly used and relatively aggressive products such as whiskey, aniseed aperitif, strong alcohol such as fruit alcohol or other, etc.

All of these tests have been shown to yield excellent results.

Thus the method of finishing a wooden surface has made it possible to obtain a piece of furniture according to the present invention having a pleasant appearance (waxed or varnished finish) and resistant to water and heat.

Such an improvement compared to the prior art is particularly advantageous for a table, more particularly the table top which can be used without protection such as rubber mat and tablecloth, or other, more or less aesthetic.
