Abstract

The cable comprises upper 120 and lower 130 insulation sandwiching intermediate parallel conductors 140 and joined by parallel welded seams between adjacent conductors 150 having a textured, e.g. knurled, surface and smooth or less rough seams 115 at the cable edge. Edge seams may comprise a textured zone adjacent a conductor and a smooth zone adjacent the edge. Texturing reduces contact area when the cable contacts itself, reducing friction and torque and the smooth edge reduces noise when used in an airbag to steering wheel clockspring. Also disclosed: a modular rotary anvil for an ultrasonic welding machine (Fig 8a), for producing flat cable, comprising interchangable knurled 160, protrusion 162 or cutting (172 Fig. 9b) inserts , bracket inserts 164, 166 and end segments 168, 170 allowing anvil assembly according to cable configuration desired; and conductors comprising grouped layered or tandem strips for sandwiching without adhesive (Figs 24-27).
