Abstract

The brake warning lights are activated by a system which detects displacement (lifting) of the driver's foot between accelerator pedal and brake pedal, and illuminates the brake warning lights immediately this movement is detected. The movement of the foot from the accelerator to the brake is detected by photoelectric cells which sense passage of the foot between the two pedals. Two light beams are used to sense the direction of movement of the foot so when the driver returns the foot to the accelerator pedal the brake lights are not activated. An alternative uses a flexible rod suspended between the two pedals so movement of the drivers foot between the pedals displaces the rod. The rod operates an electrical contact.
