Abstract

The method uses a cover formed of wooden panels which are boards (1) with a length between 40 centimetres and 60 centimetres. The length of the boards used conventionally do not exceed 40 centimetres. The boards can be formed of a resinous wood for instance cryptomeria. The boards can be made of a wood which is non-resinous, such as hard woods i.e. tamarind, teak or chestnut. The width of the boards can be between 9 and 15 centimetres.

Some roofs or siding of buildings are made using flat wooden tiles, also called shingles.

 Whatever the support, battens, jointed roofing or not, these shingles are either nailed, or stapled, or fixed by any other means, on this support.

 The figures appended to the documents describing the invention represent a shingle covering fixed on wooden battens, at the start of the shingle installation.

 This option is merely indicative and serves only to illustrate the description of the invention.

 The forms given in the figures to the various elements constituting or not the invention are purely indicative.

 The text only mentions mounting of covers.

 It is specified that the invention also applies to cladding or any other works that can be made with shingles.

 The description adapted to the work considered will then be that in which the term cover will be replaced by the designation of the work in question.

 Figure 1 shows a roof made of shingles, the shingles being installed, seen along a plane parallel to the surface of the roof.

 Figure 2 shows a roof made of shingles, the shingles being laid, cut by a plane parallel to the line of greatest slope of the roof.

 FIG. 3 shows an enlargement of detail 8 of FIG. 2.

 The shingles (g), engorger (!) Are fixed by studding or any other technique on their support 2.

Each of these shingles covers others in order to ensure
the waterproofing of the roof considered.

According to certain installation methods, the shingles can be fixed on battens of suitable dimensions and spaced from distance 6.

 The roofs produced according to the traditional process use small shingles whose dimensions are between 30 and 40 cm, without ever reaching this last dimension.

 The small size of the shingles used in traditional processes means that a large number of them are required per unit of area covered.

This characteristic has the following effects:
- Given the need for recovery, the quantity of wood to be used per unit of area is important;
- The number of shingle fasteners per unit area is large;
These two effects cause additional costs which partially explain the high cost observed for roofs made with wooden shingles.

 The multiplication of the number of shingles per unit of surface also induces a significant line of junctions between the elements.

 This contributes to increasing the risk of rainwater infiltration.

 The main characteristic of the process according to the invention is the implementation, on the usual supports of shingle covers, of shingles of length (i) greater than that of the shingles used in traditional processes.

 The shingles used in the process according to the invention have lengths (E) of between approximately 40 cm and approximately 60 cm.

 The shingles used in the process according to the invention can be made of hardwood (chestnut, teak, tamarind, etc.), resinous wood (fir, cedar, cryptomeria, etc.) or any other type of wood.

 They can also have a width4) of between 9cm approximately and 15cm approximately, greater than that of the shingles used in traditional processes.

 Their treatment against insects, fungi or the like can be carried out in an autoclave, by soaking, or by using any other process.

 The shingles used in the method of the invention may also have a trapezoidal section, in the direction of the greatest slope of the roof.

 In the latter case, the shingles are obtained by cutting as indicated in FIG. 4 of boards (2,) according to plain 10, inclined relative to the surface of these boards.

The method according to the invention has the following advantages over traditional methods:
1) Avantave 1:
When the shingles are placed on battens, the distance Q between them can be greater than that of traditional methods, thus reducing the overall length of battens and the total price of the roofing;
2) Benefit 2:
The covering length (i) necessary for sealing the roof is simply a function of the slope of the latter.

 The covering surface by shingles, with equal width, can therefore be constant, whatever the length thereof.

 The method according to the invention uses, as indicated above, fewer shingles per unit of roof area than traditional methods.

 The total of the covering surfaces per unit of roofing surface is therefore, for the invention, less than that of traditional methods.

 The method according to the invention therefore allows savings on the wood used to make the shingles and the volume of these shingles compared to traditional methods.

3) Benefit 3:
The dimensioning of the support structures for the covers (W), otherwise called frames, takes account in particular of their weight.

 The process according to the invention makes it possible to save, as we saw above, on the quantities of battens to be used (when the shingles are laid on battens) and on the volume of wood corresponding to the shingles.

 The method according to the invention therefore induces a drop in the weight of the roofing, compared to traditional method and makes it possible to reduce the dimensioning of the frame t) which supports it.

 This last characteristic constitutes another source of economy of the process according to the invention compared to traditional processes.

4) Benefit 4:
The waterproofing of shingle roofs depends largely on the average surface area of the elements exposed to the weather.

 A cover made up of small elements carries greater risks of rainwater infiltration than a cover made out of larger elements.

 The method according to the invention uses shingles of larger size than those of traditional methods.

 The method according to the invention therefore minimizes, compared to traditional methods, the risks of rainwater infiltration.

 5) Advantage 5: As already indicated above, the covering length (i),, necessary for the waterproofing of the roof is simply a function of the slope of the latter.

 The lower the slope, the greater the overlap length (must be large.

 The shingles used in the process according to the invention have a greater length than that of traditional processes.

 This length makes it possible to envisage overlap lengths (i) greater than those of traditional methods.

 The method according to the invention can therefore be implemented on frames whose slopes are lower than those of traditional methods.

Claim 1:  A method of roofing or cladding of a building characterized, with reference to the figure there in Figure 2, in Figure 3, and in Figure 4 - In that the roofing consists of wooden tiles otherwise called shingles; - In that the shingles (0 used have lengths between approximately 40cm and approximately 60cm, the length of the shingles used in traditional processes never reaching 40cm; Claim 2:  A method according to claim 1 characterized in that the shingles used are made of a wood of resinous essence, such as for example cryptomé na.
