Abstract

The knife has a notch (1) to make a hole in the edge of an oyster shell, near the joint of the valves. The notch is in the end of the handle and can have different shapes. The notch is made in an extension of the blade (2) that forms the core of the handle (3). It can be in a metallic piece that is fixed to the handle or to the blade.

Description

The present invention relates to a knife for opening oysters
It is known that oysters are generally difficult to open and that it often happens that a person, even an expert, damages the hands, both the hand which holds the oyster and the one which holds the knife.

This risk is due to the fact that there is antagonism between the hand which holds the oyster and that which holds the knife. The accident is generally aggravated by the skidding of the knife which does not enter between the two oyster valves. The hand holding the oyster may be injured by the knife, the hand holding the knife may be injured by the sharp oyster.

A kind of metal shield adapted to certain knives does not cancel this risk.

Various systems of existing knives or pliers are slow and complicated to use and more or less expensive to manufacture.

Articulated clamp systems are not very effective and often as dangerous as knives. The sawing or filing systems of the shells by devices of teeth or abrasives adapted to the blades or the handles of the knives impose back and forth movements of the knife against the oyster, slow and also causes slippage.

These drawbacks are practically eliminated by the device of the present invention which consists of a knife having a simple notch (1) in the blade (4), the handle (3) or the core of the handle (2) making it possible to practice, by a movement of rotation of the wrist, a notch on the edge of the oyster valves in order to be able to easily introduce the blade of the knife between the two valves.

FIG. 1 represents an example of the invention having a notch (1) in the extension of the blade forming the core of the handle.

Figure 2 shows the way to hold the oyster (5) to open and the knife in the use phase of practicing the notch in the valves.

Figures 3 and 4 show non-exhaustive examples of notches (6) (7) which can be produced either in the blade, the handle if it is metallic or the core of the handle, but which can also be made in metal parts attached to the blade or handle by welding or other process.

The examples given of notch shapes are not limiting.

To rationally use the object of the invention, it is necessary to operate in the following manner:
Take the oyster in the left hand, the hinge of the oyster on the wrist side. Take the knife in your right hand and introduce the edges of the oyster valves into the notch of the knife, at a location about two-thirds of the length of the oyster, starting from its hinge. This is where the adductor muscle of the oyster is located. By a rotational movement of the right wrist of about half a turn, notch the edge of the oyster.

At the place of the notch thus formed, the joint of the valves being weakened, the line of joint of the valves appears very clearly, and sometimes even a small hole is found to be obtained at this place. One can then easily introduce the blade of the knife between the two valves to the right of this u notch to be able to cut the adductor muscle and remove the upper valve by squeezing it between the thumb of the right hand and the blade of the knife.

The description above relates to a right-handed user, for a left-handed user, it is enough to reverse the holdings of the oyster and the knife.
