Abstract

The present invention relates to a masking film, in particular for providing temporary surface protection during painting work.   The present invention relates to the protective films used in painting work, in particular in the building industry and

the vehicle industry.

  Wide-width masking films are already known which are used to protect surfaces during the painting or splashing of coatings, especially in the construction of buildings. These films, generally in terms of thin synthesis, are provided on a selvedge with an adhesive tape which allows to fix the film and to determine a fairly precise limit of the protection. Such films have been described for many years, for example in patents

  US-1,760,820 and US-1,895,978 (R. GURLEY DREW), US-3,032,181 (C.A.

  HUTER), US-4,889,759 (JOHOKU Ind.), EP-548,576 (G. KLAUSS). They are also marketed for example under the name POLYMASK. It has also been proposed to make two adhesive selvedges by means of an adhesive, in particular for outdoor use when it is necessary that the film does not move due to the wind. Such examples are described in US Pat. No. 3,032,181, but their use is impractical because the second selvedge is frequently bonded to the film and renders the assembly unusable. It has also been proposed to obtain masking films with an adhesive edge coated with a protector such as those described in US-2,808,358, US-2,964,438 and FR-2,671,806; such products are however inconvenient to use because the rollers do not keep wound because of the presence of the protector so that it is constantly necessary to hold the roller so that it does not unwind itself. In addition, when the adhesive is obtained by means of a double-sided adhesive tape, or an adhesive deposited directly on the film, it has been found that the stability of the fastening is very insufficient because of the degradation of the adhesive. the adhesive under the influence of light and that the bond between the film and the adhesive was very greatly reduced after a relatively short time: it followed that the protective film was detached from the support in

for the user.

  According to the invention, there is provided a novel protective film characterized in that it is in the form of a long strip of which a first edge is provided with an adhesive strip without protector and the second opposite edge of the same face is provided with a

  adhesive tape coated with a removable protector upon use.

  This improvement of the known protective films makes it possible to obtain a band presented in a roll, the unprotected selvedge being rolled up on itself in the manner of a conventional adhesive tape and the roll remaining perfectly wound because of the retention by the adhesive. This arrangement also allows easy placement by fixing the film with the unprotected adhesive, then positioning the film on the surface to be coated and finally, after removing the protector of the second edge, fixing the second edge of the film for an exact delineation of the

surface to be protected.

  According to the invention, it is also proposed, to obtain a good stability of the adhesive attachment vis-à-vis the light, to use single or double-sided adhesive tapes whose support is opaque to ultraviolet radiation. Thus, for example, if the adhesive edge is obtained by means of a single-sided adhesive, it is chosen for it a support itself opaque to UV or non-opaque to UV but covered on its non-adhesive side with a varnish and / or a UV-opaque dye If the adhesive edge is obtained by means of a double-sided adhesive, the latter is chosen for a UV-opaque support coated on its first face with a film-compatible adhesive that is insensitive to UV and on its second side of an adhesive which can be sensitive to UV and which gives a good quality of fixation with the materials of construction. Such an arrangement, combining the use of a support opaque to UV radiation and a pressure-sensitive adhesive mass ensuring a good quality of adhesion to the building materials, makes it possible to obtain a protective film whose fixing is stable for several weeks and can be removed

without damaging the media.

  Conveniently, the film web may be from 10 cm to more than 2 m wide. In the case of width greater than

  cm, it is advantageous, for ease of handling, to fold the film before winding to obtain a roll of dimensions suitable for easy handling. According to this practice, a strip of film having a width of 110 cm for example, folded several times, is presented in the form of a roll having a length of 17 cm, a handling

  Suitable materials for the protective film are films based on synthetic polymers such as polyethylene, polypropylene, polyester, PVC, or paper-based. Polyethylene films having a thickness of 10 to 10 μm are preferably used, this type of material having the advantage of being self-fastening after

  electrostatic treatment, and to resist the solvents of the paints.

  The adhesive edge rollable on itself is obtained by means of a single-sided adhesive of which a portion of the adhesive face is fixed on the edge of the film. This single-sided adhesive is generally composed of a non-elastic support, for example plasticized canvas or paper, treated to be anti-adhesive on one side and covered on the other side with an adhesive

  pressure sensitive elastomer.

For this embodiment according to the invention, a acrylic type adhesive (Acronal A 120 from BASF), a support in the form of a 12 μm thick polyester film and an adhesive 17 of the same kind as the adhesive 6 previously described, coated at a rate of approximately / m2.   This type of masking film with two differentiated adhesive edges has many advantages over products known from the prior art. Its installation is done by fixing the film by means of the adhesive edge without protector. The small footprint due to folding and the non-stickiness of the protected edge make setting up easier and can be precise and fast. After fixing the first edge at the edge of the area to be protected, the film is cut to the necessary length, then unfolded.
