Actuellement, les meurtrières sont visibles de l'extérieur et sont toujours fixées sur un blindage opaque mais à proximité d'une surface transparente pour permettre aux occupants d'apprécier leurs tirs. Le problème se complique lorsqu'il s'agit du parebrise ou des vitres latérales, car la présence d'une ou plusieurs meurtrières diminue la visibilité de manière importante. Un autre inconvénient de ces meurtrières réside dans l'absence d'une étanchéité totale à l'eau et aux gaz. Un autre inconvénient réside encore dans le fait qu'un agresseur est susceptible d'ouvrir la meurtrière par un système aimanté ou à ventouse.
