A sintered ceramic compsn. comprises (wt.%): at least 90 Al2O3, 1.7-2 Mn3O4, 0.8-1 TiO2, 0.5-1.5 SiO2, max. 1 MgO, 0.6-1.6 mixt. of transition element oxides (Ni, Co, Fe, Cu, Cr) and max. 0.5 impurities. Also claimed is a process for the prodn. of the above. Further claimed is a compsn. as above where the piece has a density up to 90% of the theoretical density.
