Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the erosion resistance of BN-based ceramics to molten metal, glass, etc., and to increase the strength of a product obtd. by sintering the ceramics under ordinary pressure, by incorporating a specified amt. of AlN into the ceramics. CONSTITUTION:This ceramics contains >=50% BN and 1-<50% AlN as essential components or further contains Y2O3 by <50%, the characteristics of other ceramic component are emphasized and characteristics peculiar to BN are hidden. When the amt. of AlN is <1%, AlN is not well effective in improving the erosion resistance to molten metal, glass, flux, etc. When the amt. of Y2O3 is <1%, the strength increasing effect is weak but >10% Y2O3 reduces the strength.
