Abstract

The system consists of a number of buoyant chambers (1, 2, 2', 3) within the hull of the craft which render it unstable when overturned, so that it is self-righting. One of the chambers is situated in the stem of the craft, another at the stern, and there is one at each side. Each chamber can be divided into compartments or contain different materials, such as air or closed-cell foam. In a variant the chambers can be inflatable in the event of an emergency.

Description

BUOYANCY VOLUMES for SAILING BOAT
The invention relates to the existence and arrangement of buoyancy volumes of a sailboat. Due to the existence and disposition of these. the sailboat is designed to have no other position of stability than the normal position. "ballast down" We can then speak of a sailboat "self-righting @
Today's sailboats all have a hull. a keel (ballast) and a rigging. In the state all These sailboats are stable in the inverted position. that is to say that they do not return by themselves to their normal equilibrium position (at the ballast place at the bottom ...). which generally generates the emergency release
The principle of the invention relates to the existence of a buoyancy bubble hung above the sailboat and the arrangement of a certain number of buoyancy volumes arranged in the hull. The bubble makes it possible to make the sailboat unstable when it is upside down to regain its position
Specific applications of this principle are:
- existing sailboats on which a sufficient buoyancy bubble would be placed above their hull.

- existing sailboats on which an inflatable buoyancy bubble would be placed above their hull. During an overturning of the @ sailboat the swelling of the bubble will cause the return to the place of the @ sailboat.

- sailboats specially designed on this principle and whose volumes are optimized according to the specifications (weight of the sailboat. rigging height ...)
The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention
Figure 1 shows. sectional. buoyancy volumes
Figure 2 shows the position of the oil tanker around 90 "from the gite
Figure 3 represents the position of the sailboat around 180 of gite
Figure 4 shows the stability curves of a typical sailboat
According to Figure 1. the sailboat has a volume (1). called a buoyancy bubble. located above the hull of the sailboat and the internal buoyancy volumes arranged in a specific way. either a volume on the bow (3) and two volumes on each planking (2) and (2 ').

In its normal position. [keel (6) below. mast (7) above]. the sailboat floats on the volumes (2). (2 '). and (3).

According to Figure 2. around 90 cottage. the sailboat floats on volumes (2) and (3) or (2 ') and (3).

According to Figure 3. in the inverted position. the sailboat floats on volumes (1) and (3) and always has a non-zero recovery moment.

Figure 4 shows the stability curves of a standard sailboat. with and without the buoyancy bubble According to curve (4). we notice that there is a potential well preventing a bubble-free sailboat from recovering after a certain angle (α). According to curve (5). this potential well can become zero with a bubble (1)
and thus allow the instability of the overturned sailboat.

According to a variant of arrangement of the volumes (2). (2 ') and (3). the sailboat can
be semi-submersible from a certain angle of heel
The existence of the buoyancy bubble and the arrangement of the other volumes have
outlets on all currently sailing yachts.
