Abstract

The engine oil sump (1) is fixed under the engine block by screws passing through holes (2) in the sump upper edge. The sump receives oil (3) from the lubricating circuit through a filter and a pump recirculates the oil to the engine. The bottom (4) of the sump has ribs (5,6), formed in a single piece with the sump, which project respectively upwards and downwards. They are made by moulding a light metal alloy or plastics resistant to heat. Under the free end of the lower ribs is a plate (7) fixed by its edges to the sump by screws (8). This plate delimits with the ribs a meandering circuit (9) for cooling circuit water. The meandering circuit is connected through two orifices (10) to the cooling water circuit.

Description

The invention relates to a heat exchanger for a combustion engine, and to an engine casing equipped with this exchanger.

It relates more specifically to engines which comprise on the one hand a lubrication circuit through which oil - or other lubricating liquid - taken from the lower part of the crankcase circulates, called the oil tank, and on the other hand a circuit of cooling where water - or other suitable liquid - circulates.

Modern engines, in particular for motor vehicles, being capable of developing a relatively high power, they are generally equipped with at least one heat exchanger for cooling the oil of the lubrication circuit by means of ambient air external to the engine, or preferably by means of water - or other liquid - from the cooling circuit.

An arrangement known from patent application DE 2 034 203 proves to be relatively inexpensive and space-saving because it uses the bottom of the oil tank to constitute the exchanger. The latter thus comprises an upper part receiving the oil and provided with vertical ribs in contact therewith, and a lower part receiving the water and provided with vertical ribs forming baffles to guide the latter along a sinuous path under the tank bottom. But in this known arrangement, on the one hand the two parts of the exchanger are separated by a plate whose contour requires an upper seal for the oil and a lower seal for the water, and on the other hand the ribs of the upper part delimits with the plate a sinuous path for the oil, which causes a pressure drop for the flow in the lubrication circuit and a risk of cavitation upstream of the pump of this circuit.

The invention aims to overcome these difficulties and these drawbacks by proposing an even less expensive and less bulky exchanger, and presenting no risk of oil leakage or cavitation in the lubrication circuit.

To this end, the exchanger according to the invention is of the aforementioned type with ribbed upper and lower parts respectively receiving oil and water from the lubrication and cooling circuits of the engine, and it is characterized in that these two parts are separated by the bottom of the tank from which protrude up and down, in one piece, the respective ribs of the two parts, and in that a bottom plate for closing the exchanger is fixed to the tray under the ribs of the lower part.

The invention also relates to the casing of an engine, the lower part of which forms an oil tank constitutes a heat exchanger according to the preceding indications.

An embodiment of this exchanger is described below, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
. Figure 1 is a sectional view through a vertical plane, along the
line 1-1 of figure 2, of the exchanger provided with its plate
lower.

. and Figure 2 is a bottom view of the exchanger, plate
lower removed.

We see in Figure 1 a tank 1 intended to be fixed under a casing of an internal combustion engine, in particular of a motor vehicle, to constitute the lower part of this fixing is effected by screws passing through holes 2 arranged in an upper flange Tray.

The tank receives oil 3 - or other suitable liquid - from a usual lubrication circuit not shown, comprising in particular a suction strainer close to the bottom of the tank and a pump delivering oil under pressure into various moving parts of the tank. engine.

The bottom 4 of the tank has ribs 5 and 6 which project upward and down respectively, forming a single piece with the tank, produced by molding a light metal alloy or a resistant plastic in the heat.

Under the free end of the lower ribs 6 is disposed a plate 7 fixed by its edges to the tank 1 by means of screws 8. This plate defines with the ribs 6, as visible in FIG. 2, a sinuous path 9 for the water - or other suitable liquid - from a usual cooling circuit, not shown, comprising in particular a radiator and chambers adjacent to elements to be cooled in the engine. The sinuous path 9 is connected to this circuit by two connection orifices 10 arranged in line with a peripheral lower rib 6a of the tank.

The upper ribs are immersed in the oil 3 having a large contact surface with the latter, therefore providing good heat exchange with the water flowing in the sinuous path 9.

The bottom 4 thus separates an upper part 11 and a lower part 12 of a heat exchanger capable of cooling the engine oil by means of the water from its cooling circuit.

This exchanger has no junction of parts at its upper part and thus offers maximum reliability as to the tightness of the lubrication circuit. Furthermore, the lower plate closing the part which receives the water is particularly accessible, and the height of the entire exchanger is very low, which is desirable in particular for its application to the engines of motor vehicles. .
