Sur le trajet, ce rayonnement rencontre successivement une plaque transparente (4) montée au bout d'une fourchette (40) qui permet d'exercer une pression sur la cible (1) constituée par le membre, en l'occurrence ici un sein que l'on souhaite radiographier. En dessous de la cible est placée une poche (3a) qui repose sur une plaque support (2) au dessous de laquelle est placé le film sensible aux rayons X.
