Abstract

The present invention relates to a rear wheel set for a motor vehicle. The wheel set is characterised in that the wheel support (3) is connected to the arm (1) by means (7) for adjusting their relative position, making it possible to adjust the extent to which the wheel is clamped before tightening at least two fastening screws, at least one of which is substantially vertical, passing through substantially horizontal bearing surfaces (5) of the wheel support (3) and of the arm (1) respectively. The invention finds an application especially in wheel sets with trailing arms joined by a deformable crossmember.

Description

The present invention relates to a rear axle for a motor vehicle and to a method for mounting this axle.

It relates more particularly to a rear axle in which each of the two rear wheels is carried by a support fixed to the rear end of an arm whose front end is articulated on the body of the vehicle, the two arms being connected by a cross member capable of deforming in torsion to allow differential travel of the two wheels.

The arms, the deformable cross member as well as the reinforcement gussets of this rear axle are generally produced from welded sheet metal elements and the connection with the wheel supports requires the welding of one or more other parts.

In view of the deformations caused by the welding of the constituent elements of this known rear axle, it is necessary, to ensure correct geometry of the wheels in relation to their toe-in and camber angles, to machine the assembly once welded, either by straightening the faces used to bolt the wheel support, or by boring a housing for fitting the wheel stub axles.

The object of the invention is to avoid such machining, which is expensive and requires large special machines.

To this end, the rear axle for a motor vehicle according to the invention, in which each of the two rear wheels is carried by a support fixed to the rear end of an arm whose front end is articulated on the body of the vehicle, is characterized in that the wheel support is linked to the arm by means of adjusting their relative position making it possible to adjust the toe-in of the wheel before tightening at least two fixing screws, at least one of which is substantially vertical and crosses substantially horizontal bearing faces respectively of the wheel support and the arm.

Advantageously, the adjustment means comprise holes made in the wheel support and in the arm for the passage of the fixing screws and wider than the screw they receive.

According to a characteristic of the invention, the aforementioned holes are oblong.

The two arms are connected to each other by a deformable cross member constituting a welded assembly.

The invention also relates to the rear axle mounting method defined above and which is characterized in that it consists in first connecting the two arms, possibly welded to the deformable cross member, to the vehicle body, then to adjust the relative position of the wheel supports with respect to the arms to precisely adjust the toe-in of each wheel and, if necessary, the camber thereof, in particular by means of a mounting template, and finally to be fixed by tightening the screw the wheel supports on the arms.

The invention will be better understood and other objects, characteristics, details and advantages thereof will appear more clearly during the explanatory description which follows, made with reference to the appended schematic drawings given solely by way of example illustrating several modes. of the invention and in which:
- Figure 1 is a partial perspective view of a rear axle of the invention according to a first embodiment
FIG. 2 is a perspective view of a rear axle of the invention according to a second embodiment,
FIG. 3 is a partial perspective view of a rear axle according to a third embodiment of the invention,
- Figure 4 is a top view along arrow IV of Figure 3; and
FIG. 5 is a side view with partial section along the arrow V in FIG. 4.

The rear undercarriage for a motor vehicle shown in the figures is of the type comprising two substantially parallel arms t having their front ends articulated in the on the body of the vehicle (not shown), and a cross member 2 connecting the two arms t and liable to deform in torsion to allow differential movement of the two rear wheels of the vehicle.

Two wheel supports 3 are fixed respectively to the two rear ends of the arms 1.

The deformable cross member 2 is fixed to the arm t by welding either directly (FIG. 3) or by means of reinforcing gussets 4 provided between the cross member 2 and each arm t. The latter as well as the cross member 2 and the reinforcement gussets 4 are made from sheet metal parts.

According to the first embodiment of the rear axle of the invention shown in FIG. 1, each wheel support 3 is fixed to a horizontal face 5 of the rear end of the corresponding arm t by three fixing screws (not shown). For this, the wheel support 3 comprises a plate 6 bearing on the horizontal face 5 and comprising three through holes 7 arranged coaxially, in the mounting position, respectively with three holes 8 machined in the rear end of the arm t perpendicular to the face 5. One of the vertical fixing screws, in this case that passing through the hole 7 of the plate 6 located on the side of the cross member 2 and the corresponding hole 8 of the arm 1, serves as a pivot axis of the wheel support 3 to adjust the angle a of the wheel pinching in a horizontal plane as symbolized by the double arrow. The other two holes 7, to allow adjustment of the toe-in of the wheel before tightening the fixing screws using nuts (not shown), are wider than the screw they receive. Advantageously, the holes 7 and 8 are oblong.

According to this first embodiment, the camber angle of the wheel must be ensured in construction and therefore cannot be adjusted.

According to the second embodiment of the rear axle shown in FIG. 2, the rear end of each arm 1 has a horizontal U-shaped section between the arms of which the wheel support 3 is fixed by two vertical fixing screws (not shown ) passing through the two horizontal lateral faces 9 constituting the branches of the U and a vertical block 10 of the wheel support 3. The holes 11 passing through the lateral faces 9 and the through holes 12 of the block 10 allow the two fixing screws to pass and are larger than the diameter thereof so as to allow adjustment of the pinch angle a and the camber angle ss of the wheel, the latter being carried out in a vertical plane. Advantageously, these holes are oblong.

According to the third embodiment of the rear axle shown in FIGS. 3 to 5, the two ends of the cross-member 2 protrude freely on either side of the two arms 1 and each have a U-shaped section whose connecting branch of the lateral walls of the U constitutes the horizontal face 13 under which bears the vertical cylindrical end 14 of an extension 15 of the wheel support 3 clamped between the lateral walls 16 of the U by a transverse screw 17 passing through the extension 15 in a hole 15a. The vertical screw 18 allowing the setting of the pinching angle a of the wheel passes through an oblong hole 19 of the bearing face 13 and an oblong through hole 20 of the cylindrical end 14 fixed under the face 13 by a nut 21 assembled on the screw 18 which thus ensures the holding of the wheel in camber. The holes 22 of the side walls 16 of the U and the hole 15a of the block 10 have a diameter greater than that of the screw 17 passing through them.

The third embodiment described above thus allows the adjustment of the toe-in angle a by rotation of the wheel support 3 around IA (FIG. 4) and the adjustment of the camber angle ss by rotation of the support 3 around of IB (Figure 5).

The method of mounting the rear axle according to each of the three embodiments described above is as follows.

First of all, the two arms 1, welded to the deformable cross member 2, are connected to the vehicle body by their front end 1a, then the relative position of the wheel supports 3 relative to the arms 1 is adjusted to precisely adjust the pinching of each wheel and, if necessary, the camber thereof as is the case for the two embodiments of Figures 2 and 3, in particular by means of a mounting template. Finally, the wheel supports 3 are fixed by tightening the fixing screws on the arms 1.

The three types of assembly described above of each wheel support are designed so as to ensure a final connection of the wheel support. In particular, any loosening of the wheel support will be avoided by the use of long screws, with a high elastic limit, as is known per se.

In addition, in order to discourage any untimely disassembly which would cause the correct geometry of the wheels to be lost, unconventional fixing screw heads may be used, for example heads with grooves or grooves, internal or external.

The rear axle has been described as comprising a deformable cross member, but it is understood that the invention applies to a train not provided with such a cross member.

The invention thus achieves a connection between the rear axle assembly and each wheel support by bolting designed in such a way that an adjustment latitude is possible between the wheel support and the rear axle. The holes made on the entire rear axle no longer require great precision and can be obtained, for example, by punching. In addition, all the machining operations which were carried out previously on the entire rear axle are eliminated.
