Abstract

Evacuating a chamber contg. porous material, introducing active substance, e.g. previously heated, raising the pressure in the chamber to a level above atmospheric and maintaining it for a period of time, and finally removing the residual active material from the chamber and re-establishing atmospheric pressure in it. Prior to evacuation the porous material can be impregnated with the active substance, an odour-releasing agent e.g. bone oil by dipping or spraying. The porous material is pref. ligneous in origin, e.g. wood or bark, and can be spread around flowers or shrubs to keep animals away. In variants the active substance can be a pesticide or a slow-release fertiliser. ADVANTAGE - Protects plants from damage by animals and suppresses weed growth at same time.

Description

The present invention relates to a method of impregnating a porous support with olfactory compounds of an active material.

The invention also relates to pieces of wood such as woody waste, posts, boards impregnated with an olfactory material, and in particular pieces of tree bark impregnated with a repellant for animals, and their use .

Woody waste in the form of chips, in particular in the form of pieces of tree bark, is intended, among other things, to be spread on the ground to protect crops, in particular shrubs and flowers.

They allow the soil to breathe well, keep the soil moist and prevent weeds from growing.

However, the woody waste thus arranged in a layer on the ground has the drawback of being able to be very easily scattered by animals, in particular by domestic animals such as dogs and cats. In addition to the fact that the action of woody waste is thus annihilated, it is also necessary to carry out a tedious collection of the scattered woody waste.

Stakes, boards, poles are also commonly used to prevent animals from accessing certain places.

On the other hand, there are known products which make it possible to keep animals away from a place. Such products are generally in the form of granules impregnated with a repellant. Thus patent application FR-9108443 describes granules impregnated with an olfactory repellant such as bone oil.

The present invention consists in impregnating a porous support with an olfactory active material, and in particular pieces of wood.

We thus use the strong absorption power of wood: the olfactory action exerted by the pieces of wood thus lasts a very long time, the olfactory compounds being absorbed in the porosities of the wood.

The present invention also provides an impregnation process which makes it possible to significantly extend the olfactory action of the pieces of wood.

The impregnation method according to the invention consists in impregnating a porous support with olfactory compounds of an active material, in particular a woody support.

Il comprend successivement les étapes suivantes:
a) on fait le vide dans une enceinte fermée contenant le support poreux;
b) on introduit la matière active préalablement chauffée dans ladite enceinte maintenue sous vide;
c) on augmente la pression dans l'enceinte à une pression supérieure à la pression atmosphérique;
It successively includes the following stages:
a) a vacuum is created in a closed enclosure containing the porous support;
b) the active material previously heated is introduced into said enclosure maintained under vacuum;
c) the pressure in the enclosure is increased to a pressure higher than atmospheric pressure;
d) said pressure is maintained above atmospheric pressure in the enclosure; and
e) the residual active material is removed and the atmospheric pressure is restored in the enclosure.

The method according to the invention makes it possible, by virtue of the vacuum, to increase the absorbency of the porous support.

Then, thanks to the pressurization of the enclosure, the olfactory compounds are very well absorbed by the porous support.

According to another aspect of the invention, pieces of wood, in particular pieces of tree bark intended to be spread on the ground to protect crops, in particular shrubs and trees, are impregnated, thanks to the process of the invention, an active ingredient constitutes a reulsive olfactory agent with respect to animals.

The pieces of wood thus obtained have a repulsive action with regard to the annals tending to an increased duration compared to pieces of wood impregnated with a repellant by simple soaking or spraying.

According to an advantageous version of the invention, the repellant is preferably bone oil.

The duration of the repulsive action is then extended because bone oil, like all oily matter, does not dilute in water. Rainwater or sprinkler water penetrates little into the wood and does not carry bone oil with it.

According to a preferred version of the invention, the pieces of wood may also contain a pesticide, such as an insecticide which protects plants from harmful insects, or a fertilizer which diffuses into the soil elements necessary for plant growth.

When the pieces of wood are woody waste, they are arranged in layers on the ground, around the plantations.

Other features and advantages of the invention will become apparent in the description below.

Au dessin annexé:
- la figure 1 est une courbe représentant l'évolution de la pression dans le procédé selon l'invention;
In the attached drawing:
- Figure 1 is a curve showing the evolution of the pressure in the process according to the invention;
- Figure 2 is an example of the use of woody waste according to the invention.

We will first describe with reference to Figure 1, the method of impregnating any porous support according to the invention.

The actual treatment is carried out inside an enclosure suitable for vacuum, pressure and capable of receiving active material at its lower part. The porous support to be treated is placed in baskets allowing it to be easily inserted and removed from the enclosure. The enclosure has at its lower part a reservoir in which the active material is stored and heated beforehand.

In step a) of the process, vacuum Pv is made in the closed enclosure containing the porous support. The duration of this step depends on the nature of the support to be treated, the residual pressure Pv to reach and the performance of the vacuum pump. It can be between 5 and 75 minutes for residual pressures Pv between 35 and 300 millibars.

Then the active material previously heated is introduced into the enclosure maintained under vacuum. To do this, a wall is generally opened which separates the reservoir containing the active material from the rest of the enclosure. The enclosure is then immediately saturated with vapors of active material. Depending on the nature of the supports and the olfactory compounds used, this step b) lasts from a few minutes to several hours. The temperature of the active ingredient is generally between 35 "C and 1750C depending on the composition.

Then, during step c), the vacuum is "broken" to bring the enclosure in a few minutes to a pressure Ps greater than atmospheric pressure.

The pressure Ps is then maintained greater than atmospheric pressure in the enclosure. This step d) has a duration which varies from 5 to 90 minutes depending on the nature of the support to be impregnated and the composition of the active material. The pressure values Ps are between 0.5 and 9 bars.

Then, at the start of the next step e), the residual active material is removed from the enclosure.

Then we "break" the pressure to bring the contents of the enclosure to atmospheric pressure. This phase lasts a few ninutes. The cycle is then terrine.

Depending on the supports used, this can, before step a) of the process, be impregnated beforehand with an active nature by soaking or wation.

Pieces of wood, such as woody waste, posts, boards can be impregnated with an olfactory active material by the process according to the invention described above.

In certain cases, the active material is a perfuming composition.

Porous supports, such as tree bark, can thus be placed in a room in a house, thus associating their deodorizing action with their decorative function.

When the pieces of wood, in particular pieces of tree bark are intended to be spread on the ground to protect crops, the active ingredient can be an olfactory repellant against animals.

The repellant is preferably bone oil. The latter is introduced in an amount such that the wood waste finally contains, approximately 1 to 10% by weight of bone oil.

Such an amount of oil is sufficient to keep pets away by smell.

In accordance with FIG. 2, at least one layer of woody waste 1 impregnated according to the invention is disposed on the ground 2 around the plantations 3.

Woody waste 1 allows the soil to breathe well, to keep the soil moist, to prevent weed growth and to keep pets away.

As illustrated in FIG. 2, several layers of woody waste 1 can be superimposed in order to ensure better insulation of the soil.

Although all the layers may consist of wood waste 1 i., Containing a repellant, only the upper layer, for reasons of economy, may consist of wood waste 1 impregnated, without effectiveness against animals is affected.

The active ingredient may further include a vaporizing pesticide or a progressive release fertilizer.

Of course, the invention is not limited to the example described above and many modifications can be made without departing from the scope of the invention.

Thus, other plant waste than pieces of tree bark, having good absorbency, can be used in the context of the invention.

D'autres agents répulsifs olfactifs peuvent également être utilisés. Other olfactory repellents can also be used.

Pieces of wood such as a stake, stake, board, post ... can be impregnated with an olfactory repellant.

The porous supports can also consist of wood shavings, expanded clay balls, plastic films ...
