Abstract
Description
DISPOSITIF DE PROTECTION EN UN MATERIAU SEMI-RIGIDE D'UNE
PALETTE DE MANUTENTION ET PROCEDE DE FABRICATION DE CE
DISPOSITIF.DEVICE FOR PROTECTING A SEMI-RIGID MATERIAL FROM A
HANDLING PALLET AND MANUFACTURING METHOD THEREOF
DEVICE.
The present invention relates to a device for protecting a semi-rigid material, in particular corrugated cardboard, from a handling pallet and from the base of a stack of objects stacked on this pallet. The invention also relates to a method of manufacturing this device.
We know that many products are handled using handling pallets, on which they are sometimes exposed directly for sale, in particular in hypermarkets. These products often do not have an overwrap, with the exception, possibly, of a sheath made of a heat-shrinkable material, which keeps them in position on the pallet.
The latter is however exposed directly to the eye and it usually does not include any means of protecting objects resting directly on the pallet, which therefore risk being altered as a result of impacts, during movement of the pallet.
To overcome this drawback, it has already proposed to equip the pallets, at their periphery, with a belt made of a semi-rigid material such as corrugated cardboard, but this belt is composed of a band whose ends are joined by staples, or two strips also assembled using staples. However, these metal staples are themselves liable to injure articles resting on the pallet and, even, in the case where these objects are plastic bottles or cardboard packaging for liquids, to pierce them.
In addition, in these belts of the prior art, the corrugated cardboard grooves are generally arranged vertically, so that the cardboard tends to break during use and to form folds.
An object of the present invention and to replace these belts with staples with a protective device also forming a belt, but in one piece, that is to say from a simple corrugated cardboard suitably cut, pushed back (folded) and shaping, without the use of ancillary assembly members such as staples.
Another object of the invention is to provide such a protection device in which the grooves of the corrugated cardboard are arranged parallel to the surface of the pallet, so as to offer optimum mechanical resistance during use.
The invention finally aims to provide a device of this type which, in one of its embodiments, can be made integral with the stack of objects resting on the pallet, by insertion and pinching of parts adjoining the belt properly said between two superimposed layers of these objects.
To this end, the subject of the invention is a device for protecting a handling pallet and the base of a stack of articles stacked on this pallet, of the type comprising a belt made of a semi-rigid material such as corrugated cardboard, which laterally encloses the pallet, characterized in that said belt is in one piece and produced by cutting and pressing a single cardboard plate, without the addition of assembly members such as staples.
More specifically, the device according to the invention consists of a one-piece belt made of a semi-rigid material such as corrugated cardboard, comprising two bands adjoining each other at each end, on the one hand, by a connecting member integral with these two bands and, on the other hand, by bonding together parts of these bands joined by this connecting member, the two bands having fold lines in positions corresponding to those of the vertical edges of the pallet against which they are applied laterally.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, this device will comprise at least one tab or strip articulated by a fold line on the upper part of the belt, so that it can be folded perpendicular to this belt towards the pallet which it encloses and to be engaged between two superposed layers of a batch of objects resting on this pallet, in order to be firmly integral with this batch of objects and to effectively protect the lower layer or layers of this batch at the same time as the palette.
The invention also relates to a method of manufacturing a device as described above for the protection of a handling pallet and of the base of a stack of articles stacked on this pallet, characterized in that , in a substantially rectangular plate made of a semi-rigid material such as corrugated cardboard, an incision is made in its middle part, a substantially continuous incision from one of the shortest edges of this plate to the parallel edge, leaving however to remain between each of the ends of this incision and the shortest edge adjoining a space forming a connecting member between each of the bands defined by this incision in the rectangular plate, in that from each of the ends of this incision, household in the rectangular plate of the first upsets perpendicular to the short sides of the plate, in that one also practices in each of the separate bands in the rectangular plate area by the incision line of the second upsets perpendicular to the long sides of the plate, in locations corresponding to the vertical edges of the pallet to be fitted, including from the ends of the incision, in that the plate at the level of the first upsets and 1 incision, in that the two bands separated by the incision are moved apart from one another by pivoting around the second upsets, in order to conform the belt formed by these bands to the profile from the periphery of the pallet to be fitted and in that the ends of the strips disposed between the second delivery lines sticking between them starting from the ends of the incision and the small contiguous edges of the two strips.
The adjoining parts of the bands, arranged between the upsetting from the ends of the incision and the short sides of the plate, will preferably be pushed towards the inside of the belt and applied against the internal face of one of the bands of that -this, whose corrugated cardboard has previously been advantageously crushed to limit the extra thickness caused by this part.
As indicated above, the corrugated cardboard grooves will advantageously be arranged parallel to the long sides of the rectangular plate, so as to reinforce the mechanical characteristics of the belt of the device according to the invention.
The external faces of this belt can advantageously bear illustrations, advertising mentions, registered trademarks, reinforcing the attractive character of the device and praising the qualities of the products displayed for sale on the pallet.
The accompanying drawings, which are not limiting, illustrate two forms of implementation of the invention.

We will first refer to Figures 1 to 3.
As seen in Figure 1, we start from a rectangular plate 1 of corrugated cardboard, in which a longitudinal incision 2 is made longitudinally, perpendicular to the short sides of the plate.
In this case, this incision 2 is rectilinear.
It divides plate 1 into two strips 1a and 1b.
The incision 2 does not extend to the small strips of the rectangular plate, so that the portions of the strips 1a and 1b remain adjoining.
From the ends of the incision 2, the first push-backs (folds) 3 are made in the plate 1, extending the incision 2 to the short sides of the plate, as well as the second push-ups 4, perpendicular to the long sides of the plate and corresponding to two diagonally opposite vertical edges of the pallet to be fitted with the device according to the invention. Upsets 5, parallel to the upsets 4, are also made in the strips 1a and 1b at locations corresponding to the two other diagonally opposite edges of the pallet to be fitted with this device.
As shown in Figure 2, to shape the device according to the invention, simply fold the plate 1 around the outlets 3 and the incision 2, then separate the bands from one another la and lb, by folding them along the upsets 5, and gluing between them the end parts of the bands la and lb separating the upsets 4 from the small contiguous edges, to obtain a belt 6, ready to equip a handling pallet and the base of the stack of objects it supports, with the upsets 4 and 5 in positions corresponding to those of the vertical edges of the pallet.
The end portions of the strips 1a and 1b, by which these are contiguous, can be pushed back towards the inside of the belt 6 before being bonded together and applied and glued against an internal face of this belt, of which the corresponding portion may advantageously have been previously crushed, to limit the resulting additional thickness.
As can be seen in FIG. 1, the grooves of the corrugated cardboard are advantageously arranged parallel to the long sides of the plate 1, in order to increase the mechanical resistance of the belt thus produced.
Figures 4 and 8 show a second embodiment of the invention. In these figures, the elements already described are designated by the same reference numbers.
The only difference with the embodiment illustrated in FIGS. 1 to 3 is that the incision line 2 ′ is no longer straight, but has slots, defining parts 7 ′, articulated on the strips a, and l'b by 8 'upsets, parallel to the long sides of the plate.
A belt 6 ′ is thus obtained (FIG. 7) in which the parts 7 ′ can be folded back perpendicular to the belt proper, towards the inside of the latter, to come to engage between two lower layers of a stack of 'objects 10' resting on a pallet 9 ', in order to make the belt 6' perfectly secured to the assembly (Figure 8).
If the belt is put in position on the pallet before moving it using a forklift, we can either provide that the belt does not descend to the ground, in order to engage the teeth of the fork in the usual way under the pallet, that is to say notches in the belt, for the passage of these teeth.
As indicated, the external faces of this belt can be attractively decorated and bear the marks of the products supported by the pallet and of the advertising messages relating thereto.
