Après la réparation de la surface d'un rail nécessitée par un rechargement par soudure à l'arc ou après la soudure de deux tronçons de rail par procédé électrique ou aluminothermique, il subsiste un défaut de surface dû à une excroissance du métal qu'il convient de faire disparaître. Cette excroissance de métal est supprimée en deux opérations distinctes. La première qui constitue le dégrossissage est effectuée le plus souvent à l'aide d'unemeule boisseau ou, plus rarement en
France, en utilisant un dispositif de meulage guide, incapable de copier le profil du rail encadrant, notamment aux congés supérieurs où le rayon de courbure de la table de roulement est faible. Elle consiste à rétablir la partie supérieure du rail en contact avec les roues des engins ferroviaires de façon à ce qu'elle présente une parfaite continuité du profil. Elle est actuellement effectuée à l'aide de meules boisseau, tenues à la main par des opérateurs très spécialisés car les tolérances d'exécution sont très faibles (0, + 2/10) et seront prochainement réduites pour s'adapter aux très grandes vitesses. Certains utilisent également le dispositif rudimentaire guidé par le rail dont il est question précédemment et qui nécessite autant de réglages de la meule qu'il est exécuté de passes, sans pour autant reproduire parfaitement le champignon du rail.Current state of rail grinding techniques after repair

Le dispositif d'usinage r (meule boisseau (1), fraise ou bande abrasive) mue par un moteur (2) qui peut être hydraulique, électrique ou autre), - est solidaire de deux palpeurs (3) et oscille autour du rail.Ce dispositif permet à l'outil (1), après un réglage initial, à l'aide d'un bouton gradué, de se déplacer aussi bien dans le sens perpendiculaire au rail pour en suivre et reproduire les contours palpés de part et d autre du défaut à éliminer que dans le sers longitudinal. L'opérateur, après avoir effectué le réglage initial, anime l'ensemble porte meule d'un mouvement alternatif horizontal (6) tout en faisant parcourir à l'ensemble une rotation autour du champignon du rail (partie supérieure et faces laLéwales) en manipulant un organe de commande (5). Les manoeuvres effectuées par l'opér-a- teur peuvent faire l'objet d'une mécanisation à l'exception de celle du réglage initial de la meule par rapport au rail.Cette machine permet donc à un opérateur non spécialisé d'effectuer, avec, avec un nombre très réduit de réglages simples, un travail de reprofilage dont les résultats sont aussi bons, sinon meilleurs que ceux obtenus jusqu'ici par des ouvriers très spécialisés. De plus, la meule n'étant plus tenue à la main mais guidée par la machine, il est possible de doubler ( 3 000 à 6 000 T/mn) la vitesse de rotation de la meule et de diminuer le temps d'exécution du travail. Sur le plan de l'ergonomie du du poste de travail, on peut noter les améliorations suivantes par rapport à la méthode manuelle utilisée jusqu'ici - L'opérateur qui peut se tenir plus éloigné de la zone de
