Abstract
Description
Handling facility for the storage and supply of articles of different types.
The present invention relates to improvements in an automatic storage and removal facility consisting of conventional dewaxing in a rack structure comprising vertical rows of compartments, each adapted to hold an article, and a moving machine along a side of the shelving structure, the machine comprising a vertically movable carriage and equipped with article handling means able to place an article in or to remove an article from a compartment selected from the compartments.
The improvements of the invention relate to the handling of articles that are removed from a storage location in the rack structure and brought to an adjacent station when necessary in that station. When the articles in stock are of several different types, the invention allows quick access to the distribution station to any of the different types of articles and in any desired sequence. For example, the distribution station may be a station on the parts line that vary in the type of item they require and that must be sent to the workstation, this need being random in the sense that it does not show up for the position working in a particular sequence. Part # 1 may need a Type A element; Exhibit 2 of a type C element; Exhibit No 3 of a type C element; Exhibit 4 of an F-type element; etc.
A conventional solution to the problem of providing access to the distribution station of any one of a number of articles of different types in a storage and retrieval facility is to provide an individual conveyor from the installation to the distribution station for each type of item.
However, as the number of different types of articles increases, this solution becomes impractical, if only from the point of view of the need for space. The present invention provides a solution that allows random access to the distribution station to a relatively large number of items of different types using the facility that will be described.
The storage and removal facility includes a rack structure having opposite sides and vertical rows of compartments extending transversely to the sides, each compartment being adapted to contain an article. A storage and retrieval machine, mounted to move along one side of the rack structure, comprises a vertically movable carriage and equipped with article handling means for placing an article in or removing a one of the compartments that has been selected. An indexable rotary table, having an axis of rotation and a plurality of article holders arranged about the axis, and spaced radially and circumferentially by equal distances, is mounted relative to to the rack structure such that a portion of the turntable extends into the rack structure and a portion projects from the side of the rack structure opposite the side where the storage machine is located; and withdrawal. The arrangement of the turntable is such that, in response to indexing movements thereof, each article support of the turntable can be selectively positioned within the rack structure to form a compartment. transfer mechanism accessible by the storage and retrieval machine. An appropriate control, connected to the machine and to the turntable, associates their respective movements so that the articles can be selectively transferred between the compartments of the rack structure and the supports. of articles on the turntable.
A dispensing station is located adjacent to the projecting portion of the turntable and is provided with a call control unit which is connected to the control and provides control signals indicative of the type of item desired at the distribution station. In response to a command signal, the command causes the turntable to be indexed to place the article carrier at the distribution station for any item selected by the control signal.
According to a preferred feature of the invention, when the articles handled consist of a number of different types, the turntable is provided with an equal number of article carriers, each of which is devoted to a particular type of article. As the number of article types increases, the number of article carriers increases accordingly, if necessary by arranging article carriers on vertically spaced levels, the article carriers of a level being circumferentially offset from one another. those of an adjacent level. One can also use several turntables and the distribution station located between adjacent turntables, when this is made necessary by the types and number of items to handle.
Conventionally, the articles are handled industrially on pallets, trays or other forms of devices on which one or more articles are placed. The word "tray" will be used here to refer to any of these devices, the tray is the item handled by the storage and retrieval system and the turntable. Each tray contains one or more identical items. The article handling device comprises a loaded tray receiving station and an empty tray removal station, each arranged to be accessible by the storage and retrieval machine.
A platen input signal control unit connected to the control is manually operated to provide control signals in response to which the control causes the storage and retrieval machine to transfer the load trays from the receiving station to compartments. the storage rack structure and storing the compartment location and the identity of each tray. The call control unit at the feed station can be actuated to generate an empty tray signal in response to which the control causes the turntable to index the article carrier supporting an empty tray in the transfer compartment position in the rack structure, and cause the storage and retrieval machine to transfer the empty tray from the article carrier to the station discharge tray and to transfer to the article carrier a solid tray from a compartment of the rack structure.
The replacement on an article support of the turntable of an empty tray by a solid tray can be achieved by temporarily dedicating certain compartments of the shelving structure adjacent to the transfer compartment of the article support.
In response to an empty plateau signal, the command causes the storage and retrieval machine to remove a replacement tray from the storage and to place this tray in a temporary use compartment during indexing movement of the turntable . The empty tray is removed from the turntable support, placed in another adjacent temporary-use compartment and replaced with the full tray. Transfer of the empty tray to the tray evacuation can take place when time permits.

This structure 12 comprises opposite classes 15 and 16 and vertical rows 18 of compartments 20 extending transversely to the sides. Each compartment is adapted to contain an article 21 which, as shown, comprises a tray adapted to contain a plurality of articles 22 (Figure 3) and having a handling handle 23 with a groove facing downwards (Figure 2) to each of its ends.

The machine 24 further comprises an onboard controller 3 (FIG. 4) which is contained inside an enclosure 31 and which directly controls the drive motors intended for the horizontal movement of the machine 24, to the vertical movement of the carriage 25 and wherein movement of the article handling means 28.
An indexable turntable 34 is combined with the rack structure 12. This turntable 34 has an axis of rotation 35 and a plurality of article supports 36 which, as shown most clearly in FIG. radial and circumferential spaced relative to the axis 35. The particular construction of the turntable which is shown comprises two levels 38 and 39 of article supports 36 which are spaced vertically, and as shown in Figure 3, the supports of items of one level are offset circumferentially with respect to article carriers of the other level. There are altogether ten article holders 36 arranged on two levels each comprising five supports.
Suitable turntable mounting means 40 position the table 34 so that its axis 35 is vertically disposed, a peripheral portion 41 (Fig. 3) protruding into the side 16 of the rack structure 12 and another peripheral portion 42 being projecting from this side 16. As shown in Figure I, the axis 35 of the turntable is aligned with the center of a vertical row 18-1 of compartments 20 of the rack structure 12, this structure comprising a longitudinal beam 44 extending above the portion 41 of the turntable along the side 16.The mounting of the turntable 34 is such that, as shown in Figures 2 and 3, each of the article carriers 36 may be positioned in response to indexing motions of the turntable within the rack structure 12 so as to form a transfer compartment 20T accessible by the articl handling means 28 of the machine 24, a transfer compartment 20T of this type being provided for each level of the turntable.
Control means 46, indicated by SYSTEM PLC in FIG. 4, are connected to the controller 30 of the machine 24 and to the turntable 34 to correlate their respective movements so that articles 21 can be transferred selectively between the compartments. 20 and the article holders 36 of the turntable 34 when indexed in the transfer compartment 20T position.
Other control elements are included in the apparatus shown, which represents an application of the invention in the case of sending articles to a dispensing station 48 (FIG. 3) located near the peripheral portion of the invention. projection 42 of the turntable 34 and a processing line 50 for successive pieces 51 advancing in the direction indicated by the arrow 52. To further illustrate this application of the invention, it will be assumed that the.
Pieces 51 each require the installation at station 48 of one of the ten different types of elements, and this is a random need in the sense that the types of elements needed do not appear in a particular sequence.
For this application of the invention, each article 21 consists of a tray containing a group of identical articles or parts 22 of a particular type; there are ten different types of pieces 22, and thus ten different types of trays or items 21, and there are ten article holders 36 on the turntable 34. Each of the article holders 36 is dedicated to the handling of one of the items 21 and this information is part of the logic of the PLC control system 46. The distribution station 48 is provided with a hand-operated call control unit 54, which is connected to the system PLC control unit 46, is equipped with ten push buttons 55 each adapted to provide a control signal for one of the types of articles, and is equipped with a push button 56 adapted to provide an empty plateau signal. The PLC command 46, in response to a control signal coming from one of the push buttons 55, is adapted to cause the turntable 34 to index on the dispensing station 48 the article support 36 for the type of selected article.
Referring to FIG. 3, the apparatus also includes a loaded tray receiving station 58 provided with a tray entry control unit 60 equipped with ten push buttons 61 and a tray removal station. 62. Each of the stations 58 and 62 is arranged to be accessible by the article handling means 28 of the machine 24. Each of the stations 58 and 62 comprises a detector device such as a limit switch ( not shown) which is connected to the PLC control 46 as shown in FIG. 4 and provides a full station signal. A full station signal from the tray receiving station 58 initiates a loading cycle during which the PLC command 46 causes the machine 24 to transfer loaded trays 21 from the receiving station to compartments of the storage rack structures 10 and 12, the item type identity being entered manually by a signal from one of the pushbuttons which is appropriate. During this storage operation, the location of the storage compartment of each tray is entered into the memory of the PLC control 46 in a known manner.
In response to these signals, the PLC control 46 causes the turntable 34 to index the article carrier 36 supporting the empty platen to the transfer bay position 20T, causing the machine 24 to transfer the empty platen to the withdrawal station. 62 and causes the machine 24 to perform the transfer from a compartment 20 of a full tray of the same type of article. This process of replacing empty trays is preferably accomplished by dedicating for temporary use certain compartments adjacent to the 20T transfer compartment positions. For example, referring to Figure 2, the two compartments 20F which are immediately above the upper transfer compartment 20T can be devoted to the temporary positioning of full trays; and the two compartments 20E of the rack structure 10 which face the transfer compartments 20T can be dedicated to the temporary positioning of empty trays. The logic of the order
PLC 46 is then provided that upon receipt of the empty platter condition and identity signals from the call control unit 54, the machine 24 is caused to remove a full tray from the stock while the table turn is indexed to place this solid tray in one of the designated compartments 20F, to transfer the empty tray of the transfer compartment 20T to that of the designated empty tray compartments 20E which is opposite, and then to transfer the tray full of the compartment 20F to the empty article holder 36 of the turntable in the compartment
transfer. The machine 24 then transfers the empty tray to the tray removal station 62 as time permits.
When this station is full, the resulting signal that is applied to the PLC control 46 causes a beacon 64 (FIG. 4) to the other signaling device to be energized to indicate that the group of empty trays must be evacuated.
Although the article identity of manually operated call and entry control units 54 and 60 has been described, those skilled in the art will understand the equivalence of establish the identity of each article by a code supported by it and readable by the machine. Such a code may be detected by a reader at the receiving station 58, or on the carriage 25 of the machine 24, or at both locations; or by a
reader at the distribution station 48 combined with a device for detecting an empty tray condition.
