Description
FOR MANUFACTURING PHOTOGRAPHIC NEDAILLONS AND
NEDAILLONS OBTAINED ACCORDING TO THIS PROCESS
The subject of the present invention is a process for manufacturing photographic medallions as well as the medallions obtained by this process.
By medallion will be understood subsequently, the homogeneous assembly consisting of a rigid and preferably metallic support, a photo placed on the support and a transparent photo protection plate, independently of the dimensions thereof.
Photographic reproductions are in very common use, and are usually removably arranged in a frame, the photo remaining independent of its ornamental frame. The frame itself generally includes fitting and holding means. Photographic reproductions are also used in the funeral sector and are, at this time, fixed on an external surface (for example monument steles or funerary plaques), either by direct collage, or by gouging by means of two holes drilled in the reproduction photographic, or again by drilling a support framing the photo, the photo + support assembly being fixed on the final surface. But, apart from the case of enameled plates, the photos turn yellow and deteriorate very quickly, under the combined action of humidity and ultraviolet rays.
We also know plastic medallions in which the photograph is purely and simply inserted, which provides no guarantee against ultraviolet rays on the one hand, and against the detachment of the plastic frame on the other. Furthermore, such frames do not provide any watertightness in the case of funeral medallions, these remain subject to bad weather. Resins have also already been used to seal an assembly, but these resins turn yellow under the effect of ultraviolet, which after a certain time gives a deplorable aspect of the photograph of the person represented. Finally, in general, all photos exposed to ultraviolet rays fade relatively quickly.
The object of the present invention is to overcome these drawbacks and to allow the production of a homogeneous assembly, in which the photographic reproduction is integrated in a metallic ornamental frame.
According to the present invention, the method of manufacturing photographic medallions or the like is characterized in that it consists in - inserting a photograph inside a support
metallic - to cover said photograph with a layer of glue
polymerizable, and - to apply, by pressure, on the adhesive layer a filter
ultraviolet and an anti-reflective glass slide.
Thus, when the anti-reflection glass plate, previously coated on the inside of an ultraviolet filter, is introduced, the air located in and at the top of the adhesive layer is expelled from the sides and the adhesive is pushed against the walls of the frame forming a seal between the glass on the one hand, and the support on the other hand, which isolates the photograph from the ambient environment.
Other characteristics and advantages of the invention will emerge during the description which follows of a particular embodiment, given solely by way of nonlimiting example, with reference to the drawings which represent - FIG. 1, a cross section of the support of the
photograph - figure 2, a view of the anti-reflective glass slide - figure 3, a section of all the components after
mounting - Figure 4, a partial section of a medallion according
the invention - Figure 5, a front view of a medallion obtained according to this
process.
In Figure 1, we see that the support 1 has, in its central part, a cell 6 whose bottom is advantageously kept in the rough enough state. Around the bottom 6, a groove 7 is formed, the role of which will be explained later.
In FIG. 2, it can be seen that the glass plate 5 is of general trapezoidal section. It has in the face which will be the outer face, an anti-reflection layer 9 of the interference type. The edge 8 of the blade 5 is chamfered, so that the outer edge of the blade 5 can enter inside the support of the groove 7. Below the blade 5, an anti-ultraviolet filter is attached 4 which is commercially available as an adhesive film. This operation is of course carried out before the introduction of the glass slide 5 into the support 1.
In Figures 3 and 4 is shown a section of a medallion according to the invention. Referring first to Figure 4 which is a partial section, we see that the assembly obtained is integrated by lamination. In Figure 4, from bottom to top, we find the support 1 which is covered by the photograph 2. The photo 2 is itself covered by a layer of glue 3, and on the layer of glue adheres the filter W 4 which is itself adherent to the glass slide 5. The casing or support 1 is for example constituted by bronze or by any other stainless metal intended to maintain a satisfactory appearance over time. As indicated above, the bottom of the case 1 remains rough and the photograph 2 is applied by pressure. The upper surface of the photograph is then covered with a synthetic adhesive in the liquid state, which does not attack the photograph, and has anti-ultraviolet properties. It may, for example, be an adhesive known under the name "UVEKOL S 20" (trademark registered by the Belgian company UCB, S.A). The UV filter 4 is constituted by a thin layer which adheres against the inner face of the glass slide 5, so that the assembly 4, 5 is simultaneously introduced into the housing 1. This introduction is done under pressure, so that the air and the glue 3, or at least part of it, are expelled along the walls of the groove 7 and thus forms a peripheral seal. It is the recessed shape of the groove which makes it possible to retain the excess glue which is inserted naturally between the groove 7 and the edge 8 of the glass plate. Once this assembly has been formed, the polymerization of glue. This adhesive was chosen to be polymerizable by ultraviolet. In fact, once the montage has been made, it is not possible to heat the assembly, otherwise the photograph will be distorted or discolored.
This polymerization makes it possible to solidify the seal closing the space which is between the different layers and the support, so that the assembly becomes watertight. Finally, this adhesive, which is also used in the building industry for double-glazed surfaces, has the property of expanding or shrinking as a function of temperature variations, so that the connection always remains tight, whatever the climatic conditions.
The anti-reflection layer 9 of the glass plate 5 reflects the ultraviolet radiation with a coefficient of the order of 30%. In addition, the filter placed behind the blade also eliminates 30 to 40% of the remaining ultraviolet rays, and finally the glue has an anti-W effect of around 20%. As a result, photographic reproduction is practically immune to the action of ultraviolet rays.
By polymerizing, the adhesive 3 blocks, as shown in FIG. 3, the glass plate 5 inside the support 1.
On obtient, grâce au procédé selon l'invention, un ensemble compact uniforme et d'une netteté parfaite qui peut subir les effets des intempéries sans aucune détérioration, la durée de vie d'un tel médaillon étant pratiquement illimitée.FIG. 5 represents a medallion obtained by the method according to the invention, and we can see, in this figure, the frame 1 which can be of any shape, the joint formed by the polymerized glue 3 and the front face 9 of the window 5. The process according to the invention provides a uniform compact unit with perfect clarity which can be subjected to the effects of the weather without any deterioration, the lifetime of such a medallion being practically unlimited.
It goes without saying that many variants can be introduced, in particular by substitution of technically equivalent means without departing from the scope of the invention.
