On rencontre très souvent le besoin de découper, au moyen de procédés industriels utilisant une lame guidée vibrante, des empilages (matelas) de matériaux en feuilles. Une fois engagée dans le matelas et sous l'action du déplacement, la lame subit d'une part, un effort de coupe dirigé en sens opposé au déplacement, et d'autre part, des efforts latéraux dûs à la réaction de la matière le long de la ligne de coupe. Ces derniers efforts se traduisent par un frottement important de la matière contre les flancs de la lame ce qui entraine une notable élévation de température, laquelle dépend du matériau découpé, de la matière de la lame et de son état de surface. Ceci peut être très gênant lorsque les matériaux découpés sont thermofusibles, c'est-à-dire qu'ils se ramollissent jusqu'à fondre lorsqu'on les chauffe. C'est le cas de la plupart des matières synthétiques telles que le PVC, le polyéthvi#ne, etc...On obtient, lors de la coupe et sous l'action de la chaleur, une fusion des bords découpés et en conséquence, un soudage des différents plis entre eux. On ne peut plus alors détacher les différentes pièces les unes des autres.
