Abstract

Paper is glazed by running between hard rolls 2 and flexible rolls 4, 5, 7. Each flexible roll consists of a belt 5 made of elastic material running over a hard roll 7 and an auxiliary roll 4. Use for making the soft rolls more economical, more efficient and easier to repair.

Description

This invention relates to a calendering assembly, such as for example a supercalender, having at least one flexible pinch strip and comprising at least two rotating rollers firmly pressed against each other, and provided so that a strip of paper passes between them , at least one of the rollers being entrained so as to frictionally drive the other rollers by means of pinch zones formed between adjacent rollers.

These calendering sets are used to glaze a strip of paper.

The known prior embodiments produce the glazing of the paper strip in calendering assemblies in which the strip is led through pinch zones formed by pairs of successive rollers, while the conventional supercalender comprises superposed rollers between which the strip circulates by making meanders In the calendering assemblies, all the rollers are made of steel; in supercalender, every other roller is flexible and made from cotton fabric wheels which are mounted on a steel shaft and strongly compressed in the axial direction. The compressed roller is then machined to its final shape by turning. The ratio of the diameter of the shaft to that of the roller is generally 50 ... 70. In a supercalender conforming to FIG. 1, a strip of paper 1 is provided to pass between rollers K, P by forming meanders. The belt tension is adjusted adjusted by means of auxiliary rollers 6 arranged in parallel with the hard and flexible rollers. The alternating parts of hard rollers K and flexible rolls P which are pressed against each other, produce flexible pinch zones which facilitate the super-calendering of the paper strip.

In accordance with FIG. 2, in a calendering assembly according to the technology of the prior art, the paper strip 1 is provided to pass through the nip areas 3 of pairs of successive rollers which comprise two pairs of hard rollers K.

A calendering assembly with steel rollers does not achieve icing as good as a supercalender. On the other hand, a supercalender is a relatively expensive solution compared to a calendering assembly, and, in addition, the flexible roller of the supercalender is now the part most at risk of being damaged.

The object of the present invention is to avoid the drawbacks of the preceding methods and to provide an entirely new type of calendering assembly such as for example a supercalender.

The invention is based on the replacement of the hard or flexible roller with two, preferably hard, rollers on which an endless belt circulates.

More specifically, the calendering assembly according to the present invention is characterized by at least one combination of elements intended to form a flexible nip area and comprising a hard roller, at least one auxiliary roller parallel to the hard roller, and an endless belt adapted to circulate on the hard roller and each of the auxiliary rollers.

L'invention procure des avantages remarquables. The invention provides remarkable advantages.

The calendering assembly according to the invention has the main advantage of ensuring, at a reasonable cost, icing equivalent to that obtained by a supercalender.

In a supercalender according to the invention, the belt is easier to change in order to modify the degree of finish of the paper. A damaged belt can be repaired by abrasion methods without removing it from the machine. In addition, the belt is more flexible than a roller, so that the pressure is distributed more uniformly in the nip area than in the solutions of the prior art.

The invention is described in more detail below with the aid of the exemplary embodiments in accordance with FIGS. 3 to 5 appended, in which
- Figure 3 is a side view of the path of the paper strip in a supercalender according to the invention
- Figure 4 is a side view of the routing of the paper strip in a calendering assembly according to the invention
- Figure 5 is a side view of the path of the paper strip in another calendering assembly according to the invention.

Figure 3 illustrates a possible embodiment of an apparatus according to the invention. A strip of paper 1 is provided to pass through a nip area 3 formed by hard rollers 2 and 7 arranged so as to form the flexible nip area 3 by means of a belt 5 which is intended to circulate on the roller hard 7 and an auxiliary roller 4 arranged in parallel with said hard roller. The auxiliary roller 4, the longitudinal axis of which is parallel to the hard rollers 2, 7 is intended to rotate on the opposite side to the auxiliary rollers 6 which tension the paper strip 1. The belt 5 is made from any elastic material known as, for example, rubber or plastic. The hard roller 2 is pressed against the belt 5, and, as the rollers rotate freely, their rotational drive being obtained by friction at the nip 3, from a roller located below them, a speed differential is generated between the rollers so that the surface of the paper strip 1 is glazed. By changing the material of the belt 5, the length of the nip 3 and the pressure exerted on the paper strip 1 can be adjusted.

Figure 4 illustrates a possible embodiment of a calendering assembly according to the invention. In this embodiment, the second hard roller 2 of each pair of cylinders shown in FIG. 2, is replaced by a combination which comprises an auxiliary roller 4, a flexible belt 5, and a hard roller 7. Because these combinations of components are located on the same side of the paper strip 1, one obtains a glaze on one side of said paper strip.

FIG. 5 illustrates an embodiment of a calendering assembly which produces a glaze on the two faces of the paper strip because, in this embodiment, the combinations of rollers and belts 4, 5, 7 are located on opposite faces of the strip of paper 1.

The scope of the invention extends to embodiments different from those described above. Consequently, one of the auxiliary rollers 4 can be replaced by two or more auxiliary rollers 4, so that the endless belt 5 is provided to run on all the auxiliary rollers.
