Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to an original method of restraining the constituents of a joint endoprosthesis intended to be implanted in mammals and in particular, in humans.
The model proposed according to the present invention is characterized by the use of magnetic materials at the junction of the parts of the article; this use of magnetic materials allows contact between the prosthetic parts to be maintained without opposing their mobility.
Currently, the destruction of skeletal joints in humans is in some cases treated by replacing the joint surfaces.
The replacement of joint surfaces with a stent poses many problems concerning
. bio-compatibility of materials.
. the means of union between the prosthesis and the bone.
. maintaining contact between the articular parts.
It is on this last point that the present invention relates.
1) or by using prostheses whose constituents fit together in a more or less retentive manner (for example, ball joint type).
2) or by counting on the surrounding soft parts (in particular muscles) to ensure the cohesion of the system.
These two systems have various drawbacks
- for retentive stents, the main problem is anchoring on the bone; because, then, all the stresses undergone by the joint are passed on at the interface between the bone and the prosthesis.
- for non-retentive stents, the main problem is the stability of the joint itself. The independence of the prosthetic parts from one another, can lead to centering defects of the joint or dislocations of the parts with respect to each other.
The principle that we have developed according to the invention offers a new alternative to the union of prosthetic parts together.
It consists in producing prosthetic articular pieces with magnetized materials which will allow the two articular surfaces to be in contact with each other without this mode of restraint opposing freedom of movement and without the constraints on the bone anchor are excessive.
This compression principle according to the invention makes it possible to avoid the phenomena of dislocation of the parts constituting the articulation since the magnetic effect permanently refocuses the articular parts.
This principle can be applied to all the joints of the human body or mammals and it finds all its interest in the anatomically poorly fitted joints.
The description of the principle according to the invention is shown in the attached figure, by way of example, in a schematic scapulo-humeral articulation, and without a determined scale.
FIG. 1 details the glenoldian part intended to be implanted in a scapula, in the example considered of a scapulo-humeral articulation.
The implantation in the bone is done by means of the anchoring stud (2).
The magnetized part may be either the entire prosthetic glenoldian surface (1), or a fraction thereof, for example located in the center thereof, so as to permanently center the articular parts.
Figure 2 details the humeral part in the example taken from a scapulo-humeral articulation. Anchoring in the humerus is done using the anchor tail (3).
The prosthetic humeral head (4) will therefore be magnetized in whole or in part using a pole magnet opposite to that located in the glenoid cavity (1).
Figure 3 shows the position of the articular parts once implanted in the humerus (5) and the scapula (6).
The sliding of the articular parts can possibly be facilitated by covering the humeral head (#) or the glenoldian cavity (1) with a material facilitating the sliding and which does not neutralize the magnetic effect.
Finally, note that two magnets with the same pole could be used in certain joints to keep two articular parts apart and facilitate their sliding relative to one another by reducing the friction forces.
This could be used in the case of retentive prostheses.
