Abstract

A band of weld material is placed at the ends of the two pipes to be joined. The band is grooved to accept the pipes and, by preference, has a triangular profile. The top of this profile acting as a guide for the welding torch. The inside diameter of the band is essentially equal to the inside diameter of the pipes to ensure correct penetration and joining during welding. A template or support may be used to maintain the ends of the tubes in the grooves during the welding operation allowing the operator greater freedom of operation. Welds formed in this manner are also claimed.
