Abstract

The hollow wine bottle stopper (2) contains a reserve quantity of a compressed non-active gas such as nitrogen, for replacing air in a stoppered bottle (1) by the gas. The stopper is an airtight fit in the neck of the bottle and the gas is contained by a replaceable cartridge (6). Gas injection is effected by a rod (7) passing through the cartridge. Pressure applied to a push button causes axial rod displacement, a return sprung (10) valve (9) is pushed down off its seat, and gas is admitted to the bottle (8) via a nozzle (11) projecting from the bottom. Valved (14) vertical passages (13) through the stopper walls allow the air to escape as it is replaced by the gas, the deterioration of wine or similar liquids due to contact with air thus being avoided.

Description

PROCEDE ET DISPOSITIF POUR LE REBOUCHAGE DE BOUTEILLES APRES QU'ELLES AIENT ETE ENTAMEES.METHOD AND DEVICE FOR FILLING BOTTLES AFTER THEY ARE STARTED.

The present invention relates to a method, as well as a device for its implementation, allowing the filling of bottles, or equivalent containers, in particular wine bottles after they have been opened.

It relates more particularly to a process which not only ensures perfect sealing after recapping but which also prevents the liquid contained in the bottle from being spoiled.

In the following description, the invention will be described more specifically for the corking of wine bottles but it is obvious that this is not limiting and that the invention could be implemented in all similar cases where, after opening of a container, only part of the liquid it contains is immediately used, the remaining liquid being liable to be altered in the event of prolonged contact with air.

One of the problems which arises in the field of the drink, and more particularly of the wine, is that of the conservation of the physical, chemical and organoleptic properties after opening of the bottle. Indeed, it is well known that on contact with air, these properties are altered over time, which implies immediate consumption of the entire bottle.

It has been proposed in French patent application No. 79/06 415 of March 6, 1979 a wine distribution facility for beverage outlet which allows to maintain the organoleptic properties of wine, while allowing the use of large containers dimensions, for example of steel drums. According to this document, in order to ensure the flow and the conservation, a surface pressure is exerted by means of a neutral gas, for example nitrogen, coming from a bottle of gas under pressure, an opening valve being provided on the supply pipe of said gas.

Such a solution is satisfactory in the case of wine of current consumption which are delivered and stored in barrels and which especially, are in relatively limited number.

On the other hand, in the case of great wines, for which not only the origin but also the years of production are taken into consideration, such a solution is not applicable since these wines are generally delivered in bottles.

Now, more and more, consumers want to taste quality wines, and in particular Grands Crus, in drinking places without having to consume an entire bottle. This is the case for a long time of champagne which is commonly served for the cut. For this product there is generally little problem, considering that the consumption is quite important and that the opened bottle is commonly consumed the same day or at most in the following days. In general, conventional airtight stoppers, especially expansion stoppers, are perfectly suitable.

On the other hand, for grands crus, it can take quite a long time before the demand occurs again. Consequently, during this period of immobilization, the air contained in the bottle can alter the qualities of the wine and, ultimately, make it unfit for consumption.

However, we have found, and this is what is the subject of the present invention, a method as well as a device for its implementation, which makes it possible to solve this problem.

In general, the invention therefore relates to a process for the filling of bottles containing liquids, wine for example, the properties of which are liable to be altered by contact with air, a process which consists, after opening of the bottle and withdrawal of a given quantity of liquid
- to close said bottle tightly and,
- extracting the air contained in the bottle and simultaneously replacing this air with an identical volume of an inert gas vis-à-vis the liquid.

In the case where the liquid contained in the bottle is wine, nitrogen is advantageously used as the inert gas. In addition, the extraction of air will advantageously be obtained by simple pushing of the inert gas, the latter possibly being injected inside the liquid itself if it is lighter than air.

The invention also relates to a device for implementing the aforementioned method, device which, in general, is characterized in that it comprises, in combination
- an enclosure (or plug) adaptable inside the neck of the bottle having dimensions such that it ensures sealing,
a reserve of pressurized gas, inert with respect to the liquid contained in the bottle, disposed inside the aforementioned enclosure,
- Means allowing, on the one hand to inject the gas under pressure inside the bottle and, on the other hand to evacuate the air contained in the bottle towards the outside.

The invention and the advantages which it brings will however be better understood thanks to the example of embodiment given below for information but not limitation and which is illustrated by the appended diagrams in which
FIG. 1 is a schematic perspective view of the various elements constituting a device according to the invention,
- Figure 2 is a sectional view showing in more detail such a device and the way in which it operates.

Figures l and 2 illustrate, schematically, an embodiment of a device allowing the implementation of the method according to the invention, method which consists, after opening the bottle (1), and; given quantity of liquid, to close said bottle tightly then to extract the air which it contains and simultaneously to replace this air by an identical volume of gas inert with respect to the liquid.

As is clear from the appended diagrams, the device for implementing this method consists essentially of an enclosure (2), in the form of a conventional plug and which is capable of being introduced into the neck (3) of the bottle (1) in order to seal it tightly. This enclosure (2) can be of cylindrical section but will advantageously have a frustoconical shape allowing it to be adapted to different types of bottles. Optionally, grooves (4) may be provided at the periphery of the enclosure (l) in order to promote its blocking inside the neck. This enclosure (2) is based on any material commonly used for the manufacture of conventional stoppers such as for example cork, plastic material ... Inside this enclosure (2) is produced a cavity (5) intended to receive a reserve of pressurized gas (6). This reserve of pressurized gas preferably consists of a conventional cartridge, filled with an inert gas vis-à-vis the liquid, nitrogen for example in the case of wine. The enclosure (2) is also associated with means making it possible, on the one hand, to inject the pressurized gas contained inside the cartridge (6) into the space filled with air situated above the level of the liquid and, moreover, to means making it possible to evacuate the air to the outside. In the exemplary embodiment illustrated by FIGS. 1 and 2, the means for injecting the gas under pressure are constituted by a rod (7) capable of being moved by means of a push button (-8t situss àl ' outside of the enclosure (2). This rod (7) (7) passes right through the cartridge (6) and acts on a valve (9) subjected to the action of a spring (10) and which, -normally, prevents the escape of the gas contained in the cartridge (6). When this valve (9) is pushed back, the gas can escape through a conduit (11) provided in the base (12) of the enclosure (2). This gas is therefore injected inside the bottle and causes the evacuation of air, by a simple push, through conduits (13) provided in the wall of the enclosure ( 2) .In conventional valves (14) are provided in these conduits (13).

These valves (14) are designed so that when the pressure inside the bottle is substantially equal to atmospheric pressure, they seal. Preferably, as is clear from FIG. 2, the enclosure (2) is produced in several parts assembled to each other in a conventional manner, for example by simple screwing, one forming the wall (2), the another the bottom (12) and the third ensuring the maintenance of the cartridge (6) and of the organs controlling the injection of gas inside the bottle.

As illustrated in FIG. 2, the bottom (12) comprises a needle valve (20) of known type which allows both to pierce the cartridge (6) during its installation and to ensure its '' sealing. The control of this valve to cause the escape of the pressurized gas is obtained, in this embodiment, by the rod (7) which passes right through the cartridge (6) and which is actuated by means of a pusher (8). This rod (7) is subjected to the action of a return spring (15), arranged for example in the upper part (16) and which normally keeps it out of contact with the valve (9) of the valve (20 ), valve which, subjected to the action of a spring (10), seals with the cartridge (6) after the gas has been injected inside the bottle.

The production and operation of such a device are as follows. First, the cartridge (6) is placed inside the recess (5) of the enclosure (2). The rod (7) is then pressed into the upper part (17) of this cartridge and, by placing the upper part (16), for example by screwing it into the enclosure (2), it is caused by simple pressure. the opening of the base (18) of the cartridge (6), the needle) penetrating inside this cartridge. The assembly being thus mounted, after opening the bottle, when it is desired to recap it, first of all the enclosure (2) is put in place in the neck (1). This is done by acting on the pusher (8), the rod (7) is displaced which pushes the valve (9), the gas contained in this cartridge (6) flowing inside the bottle. Simultaneously, the air is expelled through the conduits (13). When the quantity of gas blown inside the bottle is sufficient to have caused the complete escape of air, it suffices to release the pusher (8) and, automatically, the valve (9) under the action of springs (10) seals and stops the injection of gas.

Thanks to such a device, it is therefore possible to ensure perfect conservation of the liquid since the gas contained inside the bottle is inert with respect to this liquid.

Such a device can be used to ensure the storage of liquids other than wines.
