Abstract

The wire-stripping contactor consists of a metal profiled channel in which the wire is gripped, and a plastic cap which guides the wire prior to insertion. Wires of different diameters can be accommodated. The channel (11) is of rectangular section and has two or more pairs of tapering side wings (12a,13a,12b, 13b,12c,13c) which are bent inwards towards its axis. The ends of the wings leave gaps (a,b,c) in the centre of the channel which decrease along the direction of entry of the wire. The arrangement ensures that at least one pair of side wings will be of the correct spacing to pierce the wire insulation and grip the conducting core when the wire is held in the device. To form the connection, the wire is inserted into the plastics cap. The cap has a profiled recess corresponding to the variation of width in the channel sections and allows the wire to be correctly positioned in the channel when the cap is snap-fastened to the latter.

Description

The subject of the present invention is an improvement to the electrical connection elements for insulation displacement connection for wire or cable described in the main patent and in the first certificate of addition No. 78 26527 of 05/09/1978. This addition applies without exception to all the embodiments of the main patent and the first addition and in particular all the claims of these two titles.

The main patent and the first addition concern an electrical contact element with an insulation displacement connection for wire or cable, having the general shape of a U-shaped section section and comprising contact means obtained by cutting and folding. parts of the wings of the profile, the contact means comprising at least one pair of planar tongues preferably each cut into one of the walls of the profile, and preferably symmetrically facing one another and folded inwards the profile at an acute angle so that the free edge of said tongues bite the conductor forming the core of the target or wire to be connected, so that a pull on the cable or wire causes a wedging effect by bringing the tabs together, for oppose the tearing of the cable or wire, thanks to the compressive rigidity of the tongues in their plane. The shape and function of these pairs of tongues evoke "lock gates".

According to the present invention, the contact element comprises at least two pairs of tongues having different intervals between the edges of the tongues of the different pairs, the intervals being increasing towards the end of the profile to which the cable or wire arrives.

The invention also relates to a cap that can be used in combination with the contact element, serving as a tool for insertion and extraction, and for protecting the contact.

Other features of the invention will become apparent from the following description given by way of non-limiting example with reference to the accompanying drawings and which will make it clear how the invention can be realized.

The drawings show
FIG. 1 is a view from above of a contact element according to the invention, the U-profile open towards the top.
FIG. 2, an elevational view of the same contact element
FIG. 3 is an end view along arrow III of FIG.
FIG. 4, a plan view of the developed element
FIG. 5, a view similar to FIG. 3 for a variant
Figure 6 is an elevational view of the contact element of Figures 1 to 4, provided with a protective cap; and
FIG. 7 is a sectional view of the cap of FIG. 6 along the line VII-VIf,
The contact element of Figures 1 to 4 has the general shape of a U-shaped profile 11 (Figure 3) in the side walls of which are cut three pairs of tongues 12a, 13a, 12, 13b, 12c, 13c. The tabs are folded towards the inside of the profile according to the main patent. They may also advantageously comprise a guiding chamfer. In accordance with the present invention, the intervals a, b, c (Figure 1) between the free edges of the tongues are different and are increasing towards the end 14 of the section through which the cable to be connected, end that will be designated subsequently, entrance end. Thus the intervals a, b, c are such that a>b> c. This is achieved by the choice of the dimensions of the tongues and / or by the choice of the folding angles of the tongues towards the inside of the profile. This makes it possible to connect conductors of different diameters to one and the same contact element. FIG. 2 shows a cable 15 having a diameter corresponding to the interval a and connected to the pair of tabs 12a, 13a closest to the input 14 of the contact.

A thinner cable will pass without galvanic contact between the tabs 12a, 13a which cooperate with the axial retention of the cable and will be connected between the tabs 12b, 13b and an even finer cable will be connected between the tabs 12c, 13c. At the end opposite the inlet is formed an output contact, for example by means of two strips 17,18.

FIG. 4 represents, by way of example, a method of cutting the contact element in a metal foil. The element is formed by a proper folding.

As explained in the main patent, a contact element according to the invention may comprise two rows 12 ', 13' and 21,22 pairs of tongues as shown in Figure 5. This example is not limiting the number of rows, the corresponding intervals of the two rows may be the same, or intervals of the upper row may be larger. In general, all the features provided for in the main patent and the first addition can be applied in the present case.

The number of pairs of tongues is obviously at least equal to two. I1 can be three as represented, or higher.

According to another feature of the present invention, the contact element is used in combination with a protective cap 23, which serves as an insertion and extraction tool. The cap has a shape of gutters, for covering the profile 11, with lateral cutouts 24 allowing the contact strips to be embedded. The bottom of the gutter has three levels 25, 26, 27 which correspond to the walls of different thicknesses 29, 30, 31 so as to form three different free sections succeeding each other by decreasing from right to left. Thus, by introducing a cable through the flared end 37, it can be engaged and advance in the gutter until its end abuts on a lower section than the cable. On has been represented by way of example in Figure 7 a cable 39 can pass in the sections33 and 34, but can not engage in section 35. Once the cable wedged in the cap, we just place it on the profile 11 to bring it In this example, the contact will be made between the tabs 12b and 13b and the tabs 12a, 13a will cooperate to axial retention of the wire.

The cap may comprise any means of attachment cooperating with corresponding means provided on the profile such as screws or an encliauetase, These means are well known in themselves, they are very varied and it is not necessary to represent them. The cap may also comprise means for jamming the wire, in axial or radial direction.

It goes without saying that the described embodiments are only examples and that it would be possible to modify them in particular by substitution of technical equivalents without departing from that of the scope of the invention.
