Abstract

Small offcuts of leather, resulting from cutting large leather sheets in the mfr. of convential leather prods., are collected for sorting. Offcuts of similar thickness and with similar characteristics are joined together by adhesive between overlapped edges of offcuts. The adhered overlaps are then positively fixed together by sewing. The assembled patchwork of offcuts is then subjected to normal leather finishing operations. The patchwork sheet is suitable for making most leather goods which are usually made from whole sheets, e.g clothing such as waistcoats, handbags, suitcases and other luggage. Offcuts of leather which were previously scrapped can now be economically recovered as patchwork leather sheet. Careful selection and assembly of the offcuts can produce an esthetically pleasing sheet from which attractive, inexpensive prods will result.

Description

The present invention relates to a method for manufacturing leather articles as well as articles obtained by this method.

The articles currently manufactured in leather are made of pieces of leather of large areas cut to the appropriate dimensions and assembled together by sewing. The cutting of these pieces of leather in the initial skins results in the production of small scraps which are generally discarded, which results in a loss of a material having a certain economic value.

The object of the present invention is to remedy this drawback by providing a method making it possible to recover these falls in order to manufacture articles having a certain aesthetic appearance.

To this end, this method of manufacturing leather articles is characterized in that small scraps are recovered resulting from the cutting of pieces of leather from large areas, collapsed pieces are gathered-substantially homogeneous as regards their thickness and by their nature, they are made to overlap each other by their marginal parts, they are assembled together first by gluing the parts in contact with each other, then by sewing along the edges of the various falls, and we proceed to the finishing operations usually practiced on hides and skins of natural dimensions (pigmentation, transfer, satin finish, graining).

The method according to the invention makes it possible to manufacture, from the scraps thus recovered, various articles such as bags, suitcases, clothing, etc., which have a particularly original external appearance, this appearance being able to be modified at will, during manufacture. of the article, by judiciously determining the relative disposition of the various falls.

The subject of the invention is also an article based on scraps of leather overlapping each other, glued and sewn together, obtained by the process according to the invention.

An embodiment of the present invention will be described below, by way of non-limiting example, with reference to the attached drawing in which
Figure 1 is a plan view of part of an article made from scraps of leather.

Figure 2 is a partial sectional view taken along line II-II of Figure 1.

The article produced by the process according to the invention and which is represented in FIGS. 1 and 2, consists of scraps originating from the cutting of large pieces of leather and which are also used for the conventional production of articles clothing or utility. The method according to the invention aims to recover these falls which are chosen so as to present a certain homogeneity as regards their thickness and their nature. For example in FIG. 1, five scraps 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 are represented, the shapes of which are either those which result from the cutting itself, or slightly adapted shapes, for example to give pieces of small dimensions of substantially elongated shape. These falls 1-5 are arranged in an arrangement possibly giving a desired aesthetic effect, so as to overlap each other. As can be seen in Figure 1, the fall 2 overlaps the fall 1, the fall 3 overlaps the two falls 1 and 2, the fall 4 overlaps the falls 3 and 1 and the fall 5 overlaps the falls 1 and 4. The overlap falls between them is carried out along the marginal parts thereof and, once the mutual arrangement of the falls has been chosen, these falls are assembled by gluing the parts in contact. This bonding leads to the production of a sheet formed in a way by a "mosaic" of falls which partially overlap each other. Once the individual falls have been glued together, one proceeds to their final assembly by making seams 6 through the superimposed falls and along the edges of these falls, as illustrated in FIGS. 1 and 2.

A very solid composite sheet is then obtained which is subjected to any finishing operation usually carried out on hides and skins of natural dimensions (pigmentation, transfer, satin finishing, graining). This produces an article very resistant and having an aesthetic character that can be used for the production of clothing, such as jackets, jackets, etc., or other utility items such as bags, suitcases, etc.
