Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a method for separating pieces of timber, such as logs, lengthwise and by means of which logs of different lengths and in particular pieces that are too long are separated into corresponding compartments.
The distribution of logs of different lengths in their respective compartments most often presented a difficult sorting problem. In particular, too long logs are a pitfall because they can stop the direct current of wood from the feed conveyor to the shredding store. It is moreover important in frequent cases, that the pieces going towards other stages of -treatment have the same length. To separate the pieces of too long wood, one generally used a manual sorting, or an apparatus in which the pieces of wood are transferred in a transverse position with respect to the direction of travel, and the conveyor has given width openings through which the pieces of timber having the desired length fall on a second conveyor or equivalent, whence the pieces of wood are moving towards other processing stages. For practical reasons, the separation operation is carried out so that the shortest pieces fall first from the feed conveyor, and the longest ones thereafter. A disadvantage of the separation carried out in this way is the low efficiency. Other disadvantages are: low precision, and a risk of blockage of the separation apparatus. As a result, the separation stage tends to easily form a bottleneck in the entire system. If the capacity of the separation stage is increased, the dimensions of the required apparatus increase, and the apparatus becomes expensive.
The object of the present invention is to eliminate the drawbacks mentioned, and to provide a method by means of which it is possible to separate in an efficient and economical manner, the pieces of wood of different length from each other and especially to separate too long pieces from those of suitable length. The method of the invention is characterized in that the pieces of wood placed at right angles to the direction of travel pass through a liminous beam which is continuously photographed by a camera, which makes it possible to obtain information on the position of the pieces of wood in relation to the liminous beam, and in that on the basis of the information thus obtained, the pieces of wood having a non-conforming length are eliminated from the system. The method has the advantage of making it possible to obtain great separation capacity by preventing sorting from becoming a bottleneck in the system. By the method of measurement on the real object, one produces an image of the outline of the ends of the pieces of wood in the interval between two pallets and more generally of the ends of all the current of timber. There is then the advantage that several pieces of wood can be accommodated in an interval of pallets, and the dimensions are obtained separately for each piece of wood. Measurement errors due to the slanted ends of the pieces of wood can also be pocketed in this way. In addition, it also becomes possible to sort the pieces by the diameter and the heads of pieces of wood according to the method mentioned.
The melon method, an advantageous embodiment, is characterized in that the pieces of wood are lit by a liminous beam having a width equal to that of the entire transverse positioner.
The method according to another advantageous embodiment, is characterized in that the opposite camera and light source creating the light beam are housed on the opposite sides of the stream of wood.
The method according to another advantageous embodiment, is characterized in that the measurement data coming from a piece of wood which has passed through the light beam is transferred from the camera to a micro-computer, which delivers a control signal to sorting means separating all the pieces of wood in an interval of pallets containing a piece of wood of non-conforming size.
The invention also relates to an apparatus for implementing the method mentioned above. The apparatus comprises at least one feed conveyor, a transverse positioner, where the pieces of wood progress, arranged transversely with respect to the direction of travel, one or more pieces of wood being placed in each pallet interval. The apparatus is characterized in that, in connection with the transverse positioner, is placed an optical electronic measuring means which measures the length of the pieces of wood at their two ends in passing, and a sorting means which directs the pieces of wood to at least two clearance conveyors, one for accepted pieces of wood, and the other for rejected pieces.
An advantageous embodiment of the invention is characterized in that the measuring means consists of a source of backlight, a camera directed towards it and placed on the opposite side of the current of lumber, openings of light in the transverse positioner transport ramp, through which openings the camera and the backlight source are in visual contact, and a microcomputer which measures the data and delivers a control signal to a sorting means placed after the transverse positioner.
Another advantageous embodiment of the invention is characterized in that the measuring means comprises two cameras aiming obliquely upwards and housed below the transport plane of the transverse positioner in correspondence with the light openings, elongated with respect to in the transverse direction, on the margins, and in that above the light openings there are sources of backlight directed towards the cameras.
The apparatus according to the invention has the advantage, among others, that it is easily adaptable to various nominal dimensions of the timber. Another advantage is that the pieces of wood can be accommodated freely anywhere in the width range of the transverse positioner. The device can also be used as a means of reporting, and moreover the device calibrates itself.

By means of the feed conveyor 1, the lumber arriving in bulk is transported to the initial end of the transverse positioner 2 from which the pieces of wood are arranged with an acceptable certainty to constitute a transverse current with respect to the conveyor feed 1. The transverse positioner 2 has a relatively large width, so that the too long pieces of wood can also pass in the course and do not cause interruption of the system. On the transverse positioner, the pieces of wood progress so that one or more pieces of wood are housed in an interval of pallets formed by the pallets 6, positioned at right angles to the direction of travel. On a margin of the transverse positioner, below the transport ramp 10 and mutually separated by a distance corresponding approximately to the difference between the lengths of the pieces of wood, two light openings 3 were made, their longest side being across the direction of travel of the pieces of wood. A wide range of processing is thus obtained by the measuring means. Above the light openings 3, obliquely in elevation, the sources 4 of counter-light are placed and in a similar manner, below the light openings 3, obliquely from behind are positioned the cameras 5 oriented so that the light from the counter light sources hits the cameras through the light openings. When a piece of wood crosses the light openings, it blocks the path of the backlight towards the cameras. The cameras 5 then observe the profiles of the ends of the lumber and the respective information is transferred to a microcomputer which calculates the length of the pieces of wood which have passed through the light openings and delivers the required control signal to the device 7 sorter placed after the transverse positioner. If the piece of wood measured is too long in a given range of pallets, the sorting means 7 transfers the wood from the respective range of pallets to a reject conveyor 8. If the part has the expected length, it is directed to the release conveyor 9 for the continuation of the operations. The sorting means 7 can for example be a hydraulically-operated guide. It frequently happens that an interval of pallets contains more than one piece of wood, and it is therefore advantageous to design and build a measuring and sorting device. in such a way that all the pieces of wood are rejected when they are dragged in a pallet interval, even if it contains only one piece of wood that is too long. In this case, it is easy to turn over the pieces of wood rejected in circulation and if desired, to shorten the pieces of wood which have an excessive length.
It is obvious to any specialist that the invention is not limited to the example presented in the preceding description, but that its embodiments may vary. For example, the invention can be implemented by means of a camera and a source of backlight as long as parabolic mirrors are used, so that the pieces of wood can be measured through the two light openings mentioned. The camera and the counter light source can in this case both be placed on one side of the stream of wood, preferably above it.
