Abstract

A technique for the collection of flotsam, e.g. oil spill debris, employs the principle of a purse net, having a very wide mouth at water level, drawn by two vessels. The purse is trawled closed at its lower end and is surrounded by an impervious sleeve which remains open at both ends during trawling. When the purse is full it can be hauled in and discharged to shipboard storage tanks, or the outer sleeve of the purse may be closed at both ends around the purse and its contents enabling the full purse to be taken back to shore for emptying. Technique is used for cleaning up after oil spills.
