Abstract

A light, rigid cellular block material which can readily be machined is made by producing a foamed suspension of chopped vegetable fibres and small beads of expanded plastics materials and sufficient binder material to produce a coherent mass when moulded using heat and pressure. The vegetable fibres may be derived from recycled paper, fabric waste, expanded plastics sheet, etc. The components may be mixed in a high speed helical mixer, with the binder being based on silicates, gum, synthetic resins, etc. The presence of the cellular filler confers elasticity and reduces the moulding density. The material may be compression moulded and oven dried. A low cost prod. is provided.
