Description

I UNIT D STATES PATENT- OFFICE.
WALTER S. RAVENSGROFT, OF PABKERSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA.
PULP CASTER-WH EEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,784, dated February 19, 1884 I Application filed April 23, 1883. (No specimens.)
ticle, or coloring-matter may be added and incorporated therewith to give to the mass the proper tint or color. I may also mix with the pulp a suitable proportion of earthy material or resinous substances, or glue may be added,
toharden and cause the material to adhere more firmly together. The pulp thus prepared is put into amold of the desired form and subjected to heavy pressure, the molds being provided with minute apertures, to admit of the escape of water or other moisture when the pulp is formed into the desired shape in a moist or wet condition. The articles, when formed, are taken from the mold, thoroughly dried by any suitable drying medium, and then coated or saturated with boiled linseedoil or other suitable material, so as to give the article the desired finish. The article is formed with the usual central perforation, to receive the pin of the castings by which the caster is secured to chairs, tables, &c., as is usual, and a bushing of metal or other suitable material may be secured in the perforation during the process of molding the article or afterward, as may be desired.
I have described the article as made from wet pulp; but I do not wish to limit myself 'to such, as I may press the pulp in a dry or comparatively dry state into the form desired by subjecting it to sufficient pressure. The pulp may also be mixed with powdered glue or other adhesive material in a dry state, and thensubjected to pressure under heat, which will cause the particles to adhere firmly together.
I am aware that it is not new to construct a pulley-wheel of layers or disks of paper or pasteboard forming the web, and other layers surrounding the web to form the rim, the whole being solidified by pressure, and such I do not claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
As a new article of manufacture, a casterwheel made of paper or wood pulp, asset forth.
