Abstract
Description
Support for coated abrasives and abrasive products as obtained from this support.
The present invention generally relates to coated abrasives. More specifically, it relates to new carriers for the manufacture of coated abrasive products and applied abrasives obtained from such carriers.
It is known to produce abrasive supports which have been folded from unbleached cloths which are conventionally treated with animal glues such as skin glue, starchy materials and / or artificSell glues.
These canvases are often satin or serge weave cloths, although they may have other types of armor.
Depending on the destination of the resulting coated abrasives, the supports must have certain mechanical characteristics, particularly as regards their low elongation in the direction of application of the forces during work. This is particularly the case for abrasive belts.
Coated cotton yarns have been used for a long time in the manufacture of coated abrasive media. Partly of these, in the weft or in the warp, yarns of high toughness have been substituted for them.
Ainsi on a utilisé à cet effet des fils dits fils polynosiques, COI me décrit dans le brevet français 1 505 536 déposé le 3 Noves bre lui66. both the priming of the support by conventional methods using all or part of the water-based preparations. Thus, for this purpose, so-called polynosic wires have been used, COI describes me in the French patent 1,505,536 filed on Nov. 3, 1967.
The object of the invention is to provide a new support of abrasives applied high tenacity and low elongation, used in particular for the manufacture of abrasive belts.
It is known to use in certain technical fields synthetic threads consisting of formaldehyde polyvinyl alcohol in which certain OH groups remain free. Such yarns are marketed for example under the name "Kuralon" (registered trademark). It is known that nKuralon® has a high modulus of elasticity, high tenacity, low heat-shrinkage and low elongation under load. This material exists on the market in various forms, particularly in the form of fibers. staple yarn, monofilament yarn or multileaf yarn.
It is also known that this material has an ability to adhere to rubber and, in view of this property, it has also been used as a reinforcing material, for example for tires, pipes, conveyor belts, etc. .
Research conducted by the Applicant Company has found that some synthetic son obtained from polyvinyl alcohol, including "Kuralon" also have, in a manner unpredictable, a good affinity for aqueous-based adhesive preparations.
Such aqueous media are conventionally used in the art of preparing coated abrasive media.
The invention takes advantage of the characteristic thus noted, and is embodied in one of its aspects in a support for abrasive products applied constituted by a woven support in which the weft son and / or son
of fabric are formed at least in part by yarns obtained from polyvinyl alcohol, and more especially from Kuralonn.
The warp or weft of this fabric may, depending on the case, consist entirely or partly of ordinary cotton, which is the material usually used for the production of known woven supports, or of another material.
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the weft and / or the chain of the woven support are constituted at least in part by the material called "Kuralon".
Type 1225n, which is a 1,000-denier multifilament "Kuralon" yarn, having a tenacity of 7.4 g / denier, and an elongation of 9%.
According to a partitularité, the contexture of the woven support containing son of Kuralonfl forming the son of weft or channe is, in known manner, as tight as possible to prevent slippage and deformation of the fabric, and the armor is judiciously a "satin" or "twill" weave, in order to increase the resistance to deformation and compactness of the fabric The weight of the yarns in the chosen direction is at least equal to 60 g / m2 and the total weight of the fabric is preferably equal to or greater than 200 g / m 2 This feature is in contrast to the known reinforcing textures of the applicant company and using "Kuralon", since in such applications the "Kuralon" is mainly used to improve the mechanical strength of the concrete. strengthening by its toughness properties.
In the new application forming the subject of the invention, the "Kuralon" yarns represent a main constituent of the support of coated abrasives and, from a mechanical point of view, take advantage of both the high tenacity of this material. and its low elongation in load in the desired direction for the product as a function of the intended work, this characteristic of low elongation being particularly important in the case, in particular, of abrasive belts, in the longitudinal direction of the belts, and the wire of Kuralon "then come to confer the bands or other products the required mechanical characteristics, particularly with regard to this low elongation.
It goes without saying that these son of "Kuralon" can for sea, as indicated above, all or only part of the frame or all or part of the chair, depending on the desired characteristics. However, it is still possible, without departing from the invention, to manufacture a support for coated abrasive products in which both the weft and the shank would consist wholly or in part of "Kuralon" yarns, although this double The use does not normally meet the unidirectional elongation resistance conditions to be met in order to achieve a satisfactory support for applied abrasive products used in the form of tapes.
Because of the affinity characteristic of the "Kuralon" yarns, in particular "Kuralon Type 1225" yarns corresponding to a preferred embodiment of the invention, for aqueous media, as it has been As noted by the Applicant Company, the use of "Kuralon" yarns for the production of woven supports for coated abrasive products has the advantage of allowing easy coating according to the primer methods commonly used for cotton-woven substrates, for example , according to which animal glues such as skin glue, starchy materials and / or artificial glues, etc. are used. This good affinity of the "Kuralon" yarns for aqueous media makes it possible to obtain a suitable primer of the support woven, the primed fabric can then receive without difficulty, also taking advantage of this affinity, the sizing layers for the manufacture of abrasive products applied to well said.
According to yet another feature, this affinity of "Kuralon" yarns for aqueous media is also used to produce "combined" supports constituted by a fabric whose weft and / or chaste are formed in part or in full by NKuralon yarns and a sheet of paper, the laminating of the web to the paper may, because of said affinity, be achieved with animal glues or the like in an aqueous medium, by conventional techniques in this field.
According to another of its aspects and as new industrial products, the invention also relates to the abrasive products applied, in particular in the form of strips, comprising a woven support whose weft and / or shade are formed at least in part by yarns obtained from polyvinyl alcohol, more especially from "Kuralon".
Examples of embodiments of woven supports according to the invention and coated abrasive products comprising such supports containing "Kuralon" yarns will be given below, without being limited thereto. In these examples, the characteristics of substrates and of semi-finished and finished products obtained therefrom with corresponding products made by using, instead of "Kuralon" yarns, according to a similar type of manufacture, will also be compared. synthetic polynosic yarns whose application has been described in the aforementioned French Patent No. 1,505,536.
Exemple 1
The unbleached fabric used to form the support according to the invention is a 4/1 satin comprising a cotton chain formed of 37 threads Nm 28 and a weft formed of threads of
Kuralon Type 1225 containing 16 threads of 1000 denier Nm 9.
Le poids de la toile est de 360 g/m2.The weaving of such a fabric is carried out in the conventional manner. The weight of the canvas is 360 g / m2.
From this fabric, the coating carried out for the finishing of the support is carried out by the methods of learning commonly used for 100% cotton fabrics and for fabrics containing polynosic yarns according to the aforementioned patent. The two faces of the fabric are glued with products of the skin-glue and starch-material type, at a rate of 60 g / m 2 by dry weight.
The characteristics of strength and elongation under different forces and at break for the weft of the unbleached fabric and the primed fabric are given in the table below, in comparison with a support made from cotton yarn and BX polynosic wires of comparable texture.
In order to obtain a semi-finished abrasive product, o deposits on the primed fabric a layer of phenolic resin with a water base added with filler. This adhesive, which is of common use for fixing abrasive grains, is hardened by a heat treatment of the type usually used in the technique of coated abrasives. The dry weight of resin is 250 g / m2. In this case again, the strengths and elongation in the weft direction of the semifinished product obtained with the corresponding characteristics of a semi-finished product made from BX polynosic yarns according to the following table are as shown in the table below. the known technique.

Example 2
We start from an unbleached canvas of a similar type to the previous one formed by a satin 4/1 again comprising a cotton channel formed of 37 Nm 28 son and a frame formed of Kuralon son Type 1225 containing however in this case 20 1000 d. The weaving is here again performed in a conventional manner.
The fabric is prepared in the same manner as before, with skin glue and starchy materials, but with a primer weight of 70 g / m2. This primed fabric is laminated on a paper of 200 g / m2, also using skin glue. A "combined" canvas / paper support is thus obtained.
From this combination, a finished coated abrasive product is produced by first applying a first sizing layer with a phenolic resin modified with a heavy solvent and containing water. The second sizing layer consists of a water-based phenolic resin. These two layers also contain inert fillers. The deposited grain is silicon carbide P40 size, 550 g / m2. The operations of fixing the abrasive grain to obtain the finished product are carried out in the usual manner.

It can be seen that the affinity characteristic for aqueous media of "Kuralon" yarns found by the
Applicant Company makes it possible to obtain, without making any modifications to the conventional techniques, coated abra sive supports as well as applied abrasive products of superior quality. The finished products can be used in particular in the form of sectional strips, the sections being cut in a direction making an angle less than 45 ° with the direction of the weft of the fabric constituting the support. It follows from the foregoing tables, which has been confirmed by the tests carried out, that the elongation of the abrasive products applied, constituted in particular by strips, under the effect of the loads or forces generally applied is very small.
Modifications can be made to the embodiment described, in the field of technical equivalences, without departing from the invention.
