Abstract

The ashtray comprises a sliding drawer (1) fitted with a horizontal pivot (12). This holds a tube (18), its open end (22) flared and its other end fitted with a spring-loaded plunger (19,23). This latter carries a wheel (20) contacting the back (8) of the tray and the lighted cigarette is placed into the open end of the tube. On closing the drawer, a toothed wheel (13) engages a rack (6) fixed inside the ashtray recess (2). This wheel rotates and a spring-loaded lever (14,15) rotates the tube downwards to deposit the extinguished butt in the tray automatically.

Description

The present invention relates to an ashtray mounted movable relative to a wall behind which it can be retracted in the non-use position. It applies, in particular, but not limited to, ashtrays mounted on the dashboards of motor vehicles.

 These ashtrays are usually provided with an internal grid on which the end of the cigarettes is crushed in order to obtain their extinction. Unfortunately, extinction is very often incomplete and glowing debris falls to the bottom of the ashtray, causing the combustion of the previous remains, which results in a particularly unpleasant smoke development.

The retraction of the ashtray is not enough to stop this release of smoke, because the seal is not good enough.

 The object of the invention is to remedy this drawback by providing the ashtrays with a simple device making it possible to extinguish cigarettes completely.

 It therefore relates to an ashtray movable between a retracted position and a position of use, said ashtray being provided with an internal device for extinguishing cigarettes.

 This ashtray is characterized in that the extinguishing device is constituted by at least one cylindrical tube open at one end and closed at its other end by a movable bottom forming an ejector, means associated with the displacement of the ashtray, being provided to ensure the tilting of the tube and displacement of its movable bottom.

 The ashtray shown consists mainly of a receptacle 1 movable in a cell 2 of a dashboard 3 of a motor vehicle. The receptacle 1 open upwards, has a front face 4, a bottom 5, two side walls 6, 7 and a rear wall 8, curved, terminated at its upper part by a flange 9 folded horizontally inwards.

The receptacle 1 can be moved manually, in a known manner, between a retracted position (FIG. 2) for which its front face 4 ensures continuity of lines with the front face 10 of the dashboard 3, and a position of use ( Fig.l) for which the receptacle 1 is accessible. For this movement, the guidance is provided by complementary shapes of the side walls 6, 7 and of the cell 2, forming slides 11.

A transverse axis 12 is rotatably mounted relative to the side walls 6,7. This axis carries, at one end, a toothed pinion 13, disposed between the wall 6 and the edge of the cell 2 and, at its other end, a lever 14, disposed between the wall 7 and the edge of the cell 2 .

A spring 15 is stretched between the end of the lever 14 and the side wall 7.

In the plane of the pinion 13, a portion of rack 16 is fixed on the edge of the cell 2.

 On the axis 12 is fixed a bracket 17 carrying a cylindrical tube 18 in which a rod 19 can slide. The outer end of the rod 19 carries a caster 20 and its inner end 21 constitutes a movable bottom for the tube 18. This the latter has, on the side opposite the movable base 21, a flared end 22.

 A spring 23 mounted around the rod 19 between an end flange 24 of the tube 18 and a stop 25 carried by the rod 19, tends to apply the roller 20 against the curved rear wall 8 of the receptacle 1.

The operation of the ashtray which has just been described is as follows
In the position of use (Fig.l), the spring 15, acting on the lever 14, exerts on the axis 12, a torque oriented anticlockwise while looking at FigO 1 o This torque maintains the caster 20 abuts against the bottom 5 of the receptacle, the opening 22 being oriented upwards. In this position, the movable bottom 21 is set back relative to the opening 22 in which it is possible to introduce the incandescent end of a cigarette Pressing the latter allows it to be completely extinguished without the risk of incandescent debris falling into the bottom of the receptacle.

 When the ashtray is pushed back towards the interior of the cell 2, the pinion 13 engages with the rack 16 and undergoes a limited angular displacement.

This movement ensures the tilting of the tube 18, the opening of which is then oriented downwards. During this movement, the roller 20 bears on the rear wall 8 of the receptacle. The curvature of this wall is such that it results in a displacement of the rod 19 in the tube 18 so that the movable bottom 21 arrives at the right of the opening 22, which ensures the ejection of the previously extinguished cigarette.

The angular displacement imposed on the pinion 13 by the rack 16 passes the line of action of the spring 15 on the other side of the line joining the center of the axis 12 to the point of attachment of the spring 15 on the receptacle 1, so that at the end of the movement, the action of the spring 15 on the lever 14 causes on the axis 12 a torque oriented clockwise while looking at Fig.2. This couple keeps the opening 22 of the tube 18 oriented downwards. The roller 20 is then in abutment on the flange 9.

 When the ashtray is pulled again, the reverse operations are carried out and the opening 22 of the tube 18 released, is oriented upwards, ready to receive a new cigarette.

 Naturally, it is possible to provide, on the axis 12, several extinguishing devices identical to that which has been described.

Ashtray movable between a retracted position and a position of use, said ashtray being provided with an internal device for extinguishing cigarettes, characterized in that the extinguishing device consists of at least one cylindrical tube (18) open at one end and closed at the other end by a movable bottom  (21) forming an ejector, means (12,13,14, 15,16,19,23) associated with the displacement of the ashtray (1) being provided to ensure the tilting of the tube (18) and the displacement of its movable bottom ( 21).  2. Ashtray according to claim 1, comprising a movable receptacle in a cell, characterized in that said means associated with the movement of the ashtray comprise a transverse axis (12) rotatably mounted relative to the side walls (6,7) of the receptacle (1 ) and carrying at one of its ends, a toothed pinion (13) cooperating with a rack (16) fixed on the corresponding edge of the cell (2), said axis (12) carrying at its other end, a lever (14 ) biased by a return spring (15), said tube (18) of the extinguishing device being fixed to said axis (12) inside the receptacle (1).  3. Ashtray according to claim 2, characterized in that the movable bottom (21) of the tube (18) of the extinguishing device consists of the end of a rod (19) slidably mounted in the tube (18) and carrying at its opposite end a caster (20) applied by a spring (23) against the curved rear wall (8) of the receptacle (1).
