Abstract

A cash drawer for a cash register contains an ultraviolet light source so that banknotes can be examined for validity. This allows fake banknotes to be recognised even during busy shop hours. The cash drawer (3) of a cash register (1) is mounted on slides (4) in a drawer housing (5). The drawer has an appropriate opening and locking mechanism. On the upper part of the drawer housing close to the opening (7) is mounted a tube (6) to emit ultraviolet rays. This is orientated across the drawer and is powered from an electrical supply via a pushbutton switch (11,10) which is operated by the drawer to switch it off when closed. Photocells (13) above the drawer opposite the banknote clips detect excessive luminosity to signal presence of a fake banknote at a lamp (14) on the register.

Description

TIROIR-CAISSE
CASH DRAWER
The present invention relates to a cash drawer, in particular to a cash drawer fitted to a cash register. Traders are exposed to receiving counterfeit notes which it is often difficult to recognize, especially since the sale of these counterfeit notes is preferably done during peak hours in stores.

There are known devices for detecting counterfeit notes, devices which are constituted by a source of ultraviolet rays.

The principle of use of this device is that the official tickets which are printed using inks of which the composition is kept secret react differently to the ultraviolet rays than the counterfeit notes printed with current ink, the latter being fluorescent .

In particular, the ink used for printing certain banknotes, in particular French banknotes, is insensitive to ultraviolet rays.

Counterfeit banknotes are therefore recognized by their fluorescence when exposed to ultraviolet rays.

Known devices are difficult to use for a trader, because to be effective, they should be manipulated when collecting a sum of money, so in front of customers, which is quite annoying for the trader with regard of its customers.

The object of the invention is to allow a merchant to detect false banknotes quickly without his customers realizing it. To this end, the cash drawer object of the invention is characterized in that it comprises means for emitting an ultraviolet radiation allowing the detection of counterfeit notes.

The accompanying drawing shows schematically and by way of example, an embodiment of a cash drawer according to the invention.

Figure 1 is a side view, in partial section, of a cash register having a cash drawer lon the invention.

FIG. 2 is a partial sectional view along II-II of FIG. 1.

With reference to the drawing, a cash register 1 has a cash drawer 2 whose drawer 3 is slidably mounted in slides 4 of a housing 5. This cash drawer 2 is provided with an opening mechanism and a locking device, well known in themselves, and which therefore are neither shown nor described.

The upper face of the housing 5 carries, opposite the drawer 3, an electro-luminescent tube 6 emitting ultraviolet radiation. This tube 6 is disposed near the opening 7 of the housing 5, is oriented transversely to the direction of the slides 4 and is of a length substantially equal to the width of the drawer 3. In known manner, the bottom of the drawer 3 has clips 8 for retaining stacked banknotes and a coin locker 9.

The tube 6 is supplied with electric current by means of a switch 10 disposed at the bottom of the housing 5. The switch 10 has a pusher 11 capable of cooperating with the edge 12 of the drawer 3 so as to cut off the supply of the tube 6 when the drawer is closed.

The upper face of the housing 5 is further provided with photoelectric cells 13 each arranged opposite a clamp 8 when the tirqir 3 is open. Each cell 13 is connected to a control lamp 14 which lights up when cell 13 detects excessive brightness, an indication of a counterfeit bill.

The user of the cash register described above is able to detect the presence of a counterfeit bill in his cash drawer 2 by the fluorescence of this bill exposed to the ultraviolet rays emitted by the tube 6.

If the user introduces a counterfeit note into his cash drawer without taking care of it, the photoelectric cell 13 located opposite the stack containing this counterfeit note detects the luminosity due to the fluorescence of the ticket and the corresponding lam pe-witness 14 s 'alight.

Means can be provided for memorizing the signal given by the photoelectric cell so that the indicator lamp 14 remains on even if the counterfeit note is then covered by an official note or if the drawer is closed, the power supply of the tube 6 then being cut off by the switch. It is also necessary to provide a command allowing the user to switch off the warning lamp 14 after checking his cash register. The electrical cells 13 could control an audible alarm device in addition to the optical alarms constituted by the indicator lamp 14.

One could provide a simplified embodiment of the cash drawer 2 in which there is only the source of ultraviolet rays, the detection of a counterfeit banknote then being made by the user, by examining the banknotes exposed to the source of ultraviolet rays during their placement in the drawer 3.
