Abstract

The junction box is to protect electric or telephonic cable joints, and is formed by screwing together two half shells (1,1a) which at the same time secures clamping jaws (11,etc.) which hold the two cables at the two entries to the box. A groove is cut in the joining faces of both halves of the box and when assembled these grooves form a channel into which an insulating grease may be injected through an inlet provided for this purpose. The clamping jaws fit into slots (14,etc.) in the ends of the junction box and are mfd. from a flexible thermoplastic material into semicircular discs having concentric grooves cut in their faces to allows, ready sizing of the cable entry holes. An adhesive tape (20) is wrapped round the cable where the jaws grip it and sealing compound may be injected between the jaws to ensure complete watertightness of the assembled junction box.

Claims

A sleeve for protecting the splice of electrical or telephone cables comprising two half-cups assembled by their adjacent edges, around the splice, these adjacent edges having a groove defining in assembly position a channel, means being provided for injecting into this channel a pasty material establishing the seal between said adjacent edges, the opposite ends of the sleeve having jaws for axially fixing the ends of the cables to the sleeve and means for sealing between these cables and these ends of the sleeve, characterized in each of the ends of the sleeve carries at least two jaws defining between them a chamber communicating with the aforementioned channel.

2. Sleeve according to claim 1, wherein the two half-shells are assembled one on the other by means of clamping screws, characterized in that the jaws are dimensioned so as to be able to bear on the cables, when tightening the assembly screws of the two half-shells.

3. Sleeve according to any one of claims 1 or 2, characterized in that an adhesive tape based on elastomer is wound around the ends of the cables, the two aforementioned jaws being intended to bear against this adhesive tape when the assembly of the half-shells one on the other.

4. Sleeve according to any one of claims 1 to 3, characterized in that the jaws are releasably fixed and axially retained in recesses formed on the inner face of the ends of the sleeve.

Sleeve according to any one of claims 1 to 4, characterized in that each jaw comprises two jaw elements each having a notch substantially in a semicircle of radius adapted to that of the cable, this notch being bordered by two wings which terminate in recesses allowing the wings of the two jaw members to be substantially in line with each other, these recesses defining mutual bearing surfaces of the flanges directed in opposite directions for each jaw member.

6. Sleeve according to claim 5, characterized in that the notch of each jaw member has a bevelled profile whose apex is directed towards the center of the notch.

Sleeve according to any one of claims 2 to 6, characterized in that each end of the sleeve carries three identical jaws abutting on the adhesive tape based on elastomer wound on the cables, the channel formed between the adjacent edges of the two assembled half-shells opening between the two jaws closest to the splice of the cables.

Sleeve according to any one of claims 1 to 7, characterized in that each end of the sleeve is extended by a substantially cylindrical tip made of two identical parts substantially joined along two diametric generatrices, the end of this tip adjacent the end of the sleeve carrying jaw members for abutting the cable analogous to the aforesaid jaw members, each of said jaw members being integrally formed with the corresponding portion of the tip.

Sleeve according to claim 8, characterized in that each portion of the nozzle comprises in the vicinity of its end adjacent to the end of the sleeve, a resilient tongue protruding towards the outside and carrying a snap-fitting nose the removable attachment of the tip in openings in the end of the sleeve.

10. Sleeve according to any one of claims 2 to 9, the edge of each half-hole having holes for the passage of the assembly screws, characterized in that these holes open into the groove in said edge, the width this groove being at each of these holes larger than the diameter of the latter.

11. Sleeve according to claim 10, comprising an injection port and a vent communicating with the channel defined by the grooves of the assembled edges of the two half-shells, characterized in that vent is disposed between two constrictions in the channel.
