Abstract

The cover is for use on vegetable trays, fruit baskets etc of wood, cardboard or plastic, and particularly for trays having wooden lugs extending above the sidewalls at the corners. It comprises a sheet of plastic (18) or similar supple material, and with a central covering surface (22) of the same size as the surface of the tray, together with openings (20) at the corners through which the lugs pass. The central surface is enclosed by an edge whose width is approximately equal to the tray height. Two opposite portions of the edge are folded against the tray sides, and are welded to two others against the ends along diagonal seams (38) at the corners.

Description

The present intention relates to an original cover ensuring the closing of trays, crates or similar packaging, used in particular for the packaging of food products, such as fruits, vegetables or fish, and this without the use of glue or staples.

Patent No. 1,565,635 discloses a cover for trays which consists of a sheet of flexible plastic material, provided on all or part of the central surface with very close perforations for the ventilation of the packaged products, said sheet comprising reinforcements formed by strips of paper, cardboard or the like, which double the lateral edges of the sheet0 Under the effect of gravity, the reinforced parts fall naturally onto the vertical external faces of the tray, which makes it possible to glue or staple them easily on said faces of the plate.

The second certificate of addition no. 77 19 154 to the aforementioned patent develops an alternative embodiment of these covers which is intended to be placed on wooden packaging trays of the Dutch type, that is to say trays which have the particularity another provided at each of their four corners, with a wooden cleat protruding above the side walls of the tray. Such covers have four corners of the covering surface of the packaged products of the notches or recesses through which the said protruding portions of the cleats pass. They generally have only two reinforced lateral bands which fall on two of the vertical walls of the tray. in place of the cover on the tray is only ensured by the combined effects of the weight of the reinforced parts, and the tension of the central part of the cover due to a spacing between the notches slightly less than that of the wooden battens.

The closure system thus obtained is not absolutely effective t during the many manipulations to which the tray is subjected to the different stages of marketing, the cover can come off or move.

The present invention aims to remedy this drawback by proposing a polar fleece blanket, in particular of the Dutch type, produced in such a way that it fits perfectly in place on the shelf without the use of staples or glue.

To this end, the cover according to the invention is made from a sheet of plastic or any other flexible material comprising a central covering surface with the same surface as the bottom of the tray and optionally provided with its cut corners. or recesses for the passage of the wooden battens of the tray and a peripheral border of width approximately equal to the height of the tray surrounding said covering surface, two strips of said border which run along two opposite sides of the covering surface being folded over the latter and welded to the edge strips which run along the two other adjacent cStds of the covering surface, the welding being carried out at each corner along a diagonal line coming from said corner.

Thus, when unfolding and erecting, perpendicular to the covering surface of the cover, the two folded edge bands, the other edge bands are themselves brought back to a position perpendicular to the covering surface. The basic flat sheet is thus transformed into a nestable cover which can easily be put in place by hand on the tray. In the mounted position, the edge strips are firmly applied against the vertical walls of the tray, thus preventing the accidental removal of the cover.

According to an advantageous embodiment facilitating the installation of the cover, the vertical side walls of the cover are provided, mainly in the region of the corners of the cover, with vertical slots arranged in staggered rows so as to allow elastic deformation of said vertical walls.

When installing the cover, traction is exerted on the side walls of the cover so as to distend said slots and thereby increase the dimensions of the side walls. As soon as the traction is released and the slots close so that the side walls tighten tightly on the side walls of the tray.

Still in order to facilitate its installation, the cover comprises at the lower end of each of the vertical edges defined at the corners of the cover, a relatively long vertical notch.

FIG. 7 shows the tray covered with the cover according to the invention.

The cover according to the invention will be described in the case where it serves to cover a tray of the Dutch type, such as qwtillustr by FIGS. 6 and 7, that is to say a wooden tray comprising at its four corners battens in wood 12 of height a few centimeters higher than that of the side walls 14,16 of the tray. However, as will be seen below, the invention is applicable to any type of tray, crate, case or similar packaging, of square, rectangular shape or having any other common shape.

The blanket according to the invention is produced from a rectangular sheet 18 of flexible plastic material, for example polyethylene. The sheet 18 is pierced with four recesses 20, for the passage of the cleats 12, recesses arranged at the tops of a rectangular central part 22 serving as a covering surface for the products packed in the tray.

This central part is surrounded on its four corners by a peripheral border, of constant width 1 equal to or slightly less than the height of the side walls of the tray. Advantageously, the recesses 20 are slightly oversized with respect to the cross section of the cleats, so as to facilitate the passage of the cleats through the recesses.

The central covering surface is pierced over all or part of its surface with close perforations 24 to allow the aeration of the packaged products.

Two fold lines 26, 28 each connecting two recesses 20 located along the width of the sheet, are marked on the sheet to separate the central covering surface 22 from two side bands 30, 32 belonging to the peripheral edge. Each of said strips has over its entire width and in the vicinity of each of the recesses 24, several rows of small slots 34 parallel to the short sides of the strip and arranged in staggered rows. All of these slots are distributed substantially inside an isosceles triangle with apex located on the recess 20 and the base of which is on the transverse edge of the sheet 18. Some of these slots, such as 34 ′, may extend to said transverse edges, although this feature is not necessary. In an alternative embodiment, relatively deep notches 36 can be cut at the distance 1 from each of the longitudinal edges of the sheet. These slots and notch give them an artificial elasticity on the side walls of the cover, as will be seen below.

The mode of formation of the cover will now be described with reference to FIGS. 2 and 3 s the two strips 30, 32 are folded along the lines 26, 28, folded over the central covering surface 22, then welded to the edge portions underlying, along diagonal lines 38 from the corners of the overlap surface. The horns 40 formed beyond the weld lines 34 are then eliminated. The blanket thus obtained (Figure 3) is protected for use
In the process of reducing the storage area, the packaging of FIG. 3 could possibly be folded along fold lines 42, 44 coinciding with the longitudinal sides of the central recovery surface 22. These lines define the other two lateral strips. 46, 48 of the peripheral border. However, as will appear from what follows, folding along lines 42, 44 is not necessary.

To place the covers, we proceed as follows: the covers positioned as in Figure 2 are stacked in front of an operator installed in front of an assembly station to which the trays filled with products are brought one by one, for example by a conveyor . The operator grasps the upper cover of the stack with both hands by sliding the fingers 80-S the transverse bands 30, 32 in the vicinity of two recesses 20 arranged along the length of the covering surface 22, as shown in FIG. 5, then it straightens the strips perpendicular to the covering surface. In this movement, the two weld lines 38 exert a traction on the lateral strip 46 and also bring it back in position perpendicular to the covering surface 22. The two recesses 20 are then discovered and the operator can embolish them simultaneously on two battens 12 arranged along the length of the tray. The operator then slides his hands along the strips 30, 32 until he grasps the ends of the edge of the strip 48 between his fingers, then introduces the ends of the other two battens 12 into the free recesses 20 (FIG. 6). The side wall 48 therefore rises perpendicularly to the covering surface 22. Taking into account the inclined position which the cover then occupies, the covering surface 22 and the side walls 30, 32, 46 and 48 are at the stretched state, so it becomes difficult to push the cover further. To achieve this, the operator exerts a simple pull towards him on the lateral strip 48, which has the effect of distending the staggered slots 34 and the notches 36 and consequently of expanding the lateral walls. The cover can then be easily pushed onto the battens.

As soon as 1 (operator releases the side wall 48, the slots 34 close resiliently, so that the walls of the cover are applied firmly, practically without any play on the side walls of the tray,
It will be noted that the installation of each cover requires only two simple gestures on the part of the operator the partial straightening of the lateral bands 30, 32 with simultaneous engagement of two battens 12 in two notches, and a pull down and outwards so as to push the cover down to its final position. Because of this simplicity of installation, the trays can be manually covered at a rate comparable to that of a machine. This is interesting for producers who can cover the trays on the production site. The time saved can be considerable compared to the case where the products are taken to a cooperative for between packaged and covered. In addition, the products are better protected and keep all their freshness.

The great advantage of the cover according to the invention therefore lies in the fact that it is easy to install and that, once in place, it stapples exactly on all the walls of the tray without the use of glue, clip on any other means of attachment.

It goes without saying that such covers can be adapted to other types of packaging than that described.

Dans le cas de cageots courants dépourvus de tasseaux, la couverture pourra ne pas présenter d'évidements 24.In the case of common crates without cleats, the cover may not have any recesses 24.

Likewise, the invention applies to packaging made of wood, cardboard, plastic or other material.
