Abstract

Machine for slitting a roll of fabric has a rotating shaft for holding the roll of material and a rotating knife, together with a mechanism for moving the roll at right angles to the knife. The rotating shaft is mounted in carriages which also house a rotating shaft with a pinion at each end which engages a fixed rack. The blade can be moved parallel to the axis of the roll to give a cut of any width. An electrical device automatically withdraws the blade from the shaft if the two come into contact. The cutting process is fully automated, and the quality of the cut is not dependent upon the skill of the operator.
