Abstract

The liq. to be reclaimed is a hydrocarbon such as fuel oil with a density lower than that of seawater; or can be hot water created by a geothermal source. The invention provides a large sheet which is stretched horizontally over the source of a liq. with a lower density than seawater. Source may be a sunken ship from which petroleum is escaping. In the centre of sheet is the bottom end of a vertical flexible pipe, through which the liq. flows naturally to a reservoir or tank floating on the surface of the sea. The flexible pipe (7) is pref. flattened and rolled onto a drum before use; and each corner of sheet (1) is pref. fixed to a buoy rope employed to keep the sheet at a desired height above the seabed. Used esp. to collect oil leaking from a sunken tanker so environmental pollution is avoided.

Description

The present invention relates to a device for underwater recovery of hydrocarbons or underwater collection of hot spring water.

In recent years, a large number of systems have been developed in order to combat surface pollution of seas and lakes. Recently, there have been shipwrecks in which tankers have sunk while their tanks are full. When the fuel oil transported is lighter than water and it escapes from the tanks, it rises to the surface where pollution is combated with surface means. Very recently, there has also been a leak in an underwater oil well and here again we are trying to combat pollution due to fuel oil escaped by surface means.

However, letting the oil rise to the surface is to let it spread out in a thin layer that is difficult to control. We know, in fact, that surface non-chemical means of control can only have a reduced radius of action much smaller than the extent of polluting water tables. In addition, with chemical means, we lose the escaped hydrocarbons and we create complexes which we are not sure are not harmful to marine flora and fauna.

An object of the present invention is to provide a device which is capable of recovering escaped fuel oil, or at least a large part thereof before it reaches the surface.

According to a characteristic of the invention, there is provided a device consisting of a large tarpaulin stretched horizontally above the source of fluid lighter than water, and a pipe connected to a central hole in the tarpaulin. and whose second end is slightly above the water level.

According to another characteristic, the pipe is flattened before it is put in place for use, which makes it possible to store it wound on a drum.

According to another characteristic, the cover is kept taut by its retained corners stretched by orins of wet buoys around the source of the fluid to be recovered.

According to another characteristic, the wall is relatively thin and its upper part in the vicinity of the level of the surface is sheathed.

The characteristics of the invention mentioned above, as well as others, will appear more clearly on reading the following description of exemplary embodiments, said description being made in relation to the accompanying drawings, among which:
Fig. 1 is a schematic perspective view of the device according to the invention, and
Figs. 2 to 4 are schematic views in vertical section of various equipment adaptable at the top of the pipe of the device of FIG. 1.

The device of FIG. 1 comprises a large tarpaulin 1, the corners 2 of which are kept apart by orins 3 respectively connecting buoys 4 to their mooring lines 5. In the center of the tarpaulin 1 is an opening 6 to which the lower end of a flexible pipe 7 which opens at 8 slightly above the water level.

It is assumed that the sheet 1 is stretched over a boat 9 which has sunk and which lets out fuel oil 10, lighter than water.

Le mazout monte dans le tuyau souple 7.In practice, the fuel oil 10 rises to assemble under the center of the cover 1 which undergoes an upward thrust. The tarpaulin then takes the form of a dome which guides the rising fuel oil towards the opening 6. The fuel oil rises in the flexible pipe 7.

It should be understood that the oil column in the tube 7 obeys Archimedes' law and that there is equilibrium when its weight is equal to that of the displaced water. The volume of the displaced water is defined by the volume of the submerged part of the pipe 7. So, to have the same weight of fuel oil, lighter, the column of fuel oil must rise above the level of the water in a quantity proportional to the product of the ratio of the densities of water and fuel oil and the submerged height of the pipe 7. When the opening 8 of the pipe 7 is maintained above the water, but below of the maximum level defined from the relationship mentioned above, the fuel oil flows and can be directly collected in tanks connected to the opening 8. A stream of fuel oil is created in the pipe 7 which rises more or less quickly depending on the height of the pipe and its internal surface condition.

It should be understood that in the static state, if the oil is not allowed to flow above the pipe, the difference in pressure exerted by the oil and the water on the wall of the pipe increases with altitude. , so that firstly the pipe tends to open and, secondly, it may be necessary to cover it in its upper part near and above the surface of the water.

A l'état dynamique, quand le mazout s'écoule, l'écart des pressions augmente moins qu'à l'état statique.  In the dynamic state, when the fuel oil flows, the pressure difference increases less than in the static state.

In practice, the orins 3 must be kept as vertical as possible. This is why the buoys 4 are each constituted by a float 11 under which hangs a pulley 12 on the groove of which passes the rope 3 at the free end of which hangs a counterweight 13. Thus the verticality of the rope can be best assured even in seas subject to tides. The pipe 7 is shown vertical, but depending on the level of the tide, it can take an oblique position, the reasoning indicated above remaining valid.

In practice, the sheet 1 can be made of flexible fabric or of plastic, which must be waterproof. Preferably, the pipe 7 is, in the rest position, flattened so that it can be stored on a space-saving drum, while making it possible to reach significant depths. It is in fact advantageous to place the tarpaulin as close as possible to the source 9 to prevent submarine currents from dispersing the fuel oil 10.

The operation of placing the device, when a source 9 has been located, can take place as follows. We start by wetting the moorings 5 around the source 9 while respecting the distances between them which are close to the lengths of the sides of the sheet 1 and so that it is centered on the source 9. Then, we descend the tarpaulin 1, the corners of which are provided, for example, with eyelets which slide along the orins 3. At each corner is attached a ballast which ensures the descent of the tarpaulin. Divers descend to block the eyelets on the moorings by suitable means, such as wedges.

We can observe that the pipe 7, supposed to be flattened at rest, the rest until the fuel oil begins to rise there. Then place the end 8 at the correct height to ensure the flow. During experiments, it was found that the liquid rising in the pipe was only fuel oil excluding water. The device therefore makes it possible to efficiently separate the fuel oil from the water and to pour this fuel oil by 8 into suitable containers without contaminating the surface of the water.

Of course, for the installation of the device, one can proceed differently. For example, one can hang, on each corner of the sheet 1, a rope which is allowed to spin a determined length so that each corner is at the same height. The ballasting of the corners must then be sufficient to prevent the cover from going up, even partially, under the effect of the upward thrust of the fuel oil. It should be noted that with the ropes attached to the corners, the eyelets of which are guided by the ropes, the tarpaulin can be placed at the height that is desired.

Preferably, in the vicinity of the opening 6, the pipe 7 can widen so that in operation, the cone formed facilitates the guiding of the fuel oil. The sheet 1 may have folds which facilitates the formation of the dome.

In Fig. 1, there is shown the upper end of the pipe still carried by a floating drum 14, the fuel oil pouring by 8 into a tank 15. It therefore appears that the device is very practical to implement, the assembly being static . Obviously, the tank 15 can be rigid or flexible.

In Fig. 2, an upper end 16 of pipe 7 has been shown, carried vertically by a floating tank 17, formed of air tubes, into which the fuel oil pours before being taken up by pumps not shown. The upper part 16 of the pipe 7 is further reinforced by a sheath 18.

In Fig. 3, there is shown an end 19 of pipe 7, held afloat by a buoy 20. The outlet of 19 is capped by a cone 21, the edge of which plunges into water, the upper orifice of the cone being connected to a suction line 22. In this case, the interior volume of the cone is filled with fuel oil which is pumped by 22.

In Fig. 4, there is shown an end 23 of pipe 7, held afloat by a buoy 24, and in which a suction pipe 25 plunges.

In Fig. 1, a rectangular tarpaulin has been shown, but it should be understood that the tarpaulin can be polygonal, with a large number of sides to better circumscribe the fuel oil released by the source.

Of course, also, if the source 9 is not punctual, but extended, it is possible to juxtapose devices according to the invention, the adjacent corners of two tarpaulins being threaded on the same rope.

The above examples show that many solutions are possible since the device of the invention puts the fuel oil within the reach of pumping and storage equipment, above the water level.

In the above description, it has been assumed that the fluid to be captured is escaped fuel oil, since this is the most worrying problem at present. However, it should be understood that the device of the invention makes it possible to capture any submerged fluid with a density less than ambient water, and therefore in particular to capture water from hot springs which exist at numerous points on the globe.
