Abstract

Device for collecting oil escaping from a wrecked oil tanker comprises a flexible plastic funnel with sides 40-60 m long and of the same height. It has cast iron weights on the sides and corners. Eyelets are fitted at the corners which slide on cables anchored to the seabed. Plastic pipes with reinforced ends which can be connected are in turn connected to the apex of the funnel. The funnel can be pulled into shape when it reaches the seabed by a calbe connected to a winch on a ship above. The device allows oil to be collected as it escapes from the tanks and before it reaches the surface.
